And Mos Def music is dust, so it balances out.

Drake is a pop artist not simply because of his hit singles but because of how he approaches his career & music

He moves like Taylor swift or any other pop artist moves

He goes in the booth for a hit & constantly floods the market to put it simple

keep in mind that’s a UKer

    So is 21 Savage

The end remarks made me think. He’s right on some level, what do we get from Drake/his music? Like from Kanye, I got some “socially conscious” stuff mixed in with your typical rap, but I think a main theme people get from Ye and his music is confidence & belief in self.

Idk what I get from Drake. I consume his music a lot but outside of “Drake n Drive” type memes earlier on, what am I really getting out his music? I gotta reflect on that

An escape? An outlet to experience joy or a celebration? Maybe how to reflect on interpersonal relationships?

Glad you said this cause I’ve broken this down in percentages with Take Care and got him straight rapping at 68% of the runtime

Meh I respect the evidence, but that’s not doing it for me. Rapping also doesn’t necessarily make something hip hop.

Let’s look from another angle: what percentage of songs are hip hop songs? It’s looking like it’s almost half and half to me. About 11 you could consider hip hop, at least 9 that are r&b tracks, with a few of them hovering in the middle ground

It’s just great sounding music. His earlier stuff was relatable but his newer stuff like post Views is just a power fantasy.

Drake's story is an underdog story. You would never look back at his Degrassi days and think that he would be the juggernaut that he is. I mean, he was killing it with Best I Ever Had and Replacement Girl, but who saw the run he's had coming? That's the theme

People consider Lauryn hip hop tho and her one solo album is pretty much a rnb album

I think they’re wrong too. Lauryn is grossly overrated as an MC/rapper

I love how mad the pop label still makes people in 2024

As if many of the most acclaimed, influential and successful artists in the world aren't making pop music

Real, it’s not really an insult

Is he stupid? Being so versatile that you can kill it in any genre and that you therefore release some pop songs doesnt mean u are a pop artist (which is what he said, cuz the interviewer asked him if Drake was hip-hop)?

If you think Drake is a pop artist then you don't know and don't understand hip-hop. F*** outta here, idiot

You as a white British man think you understand hip hop more than Mos Def? Have some self awareness you dumb f***

    @Brave This is why lmao

Shortly after the article was published, Drake hopped in ComplexMusic's Instagram DMs and left a suggestion: "Can you do an article now where the baddest Instagram girls in the world review my poetry book, not the head of the Mos Def fan club... Thanks 😂."

Nah that’s not what this is. Mos ain’t like that and he wasn’t even disrespectful

  • Jan 13, 2024

Black on Both Sides s***s on Drakes whole catalog but yeah two different styles lol

  • Mr Motion

He hasn’t been an underdog for close to a decade

He's been fighting soft allegations his whole career, even during Her Loss with the fruity memes centered around the "21, can you do sum for meee" part.

I mean maybe but that's a minority opinion. Atp drake probably has more pure rap songs than 3k but people are more likely to classify 3k or Lauryn as hip hop compared to drake and I don't think the reasoning is just the rnb thing

Mos Def is a purist so it makes sense that he wouldn't exactly see what Drake does as hop hop. That being said, that's his opinion. Drake came up on that purist hip hop.

It can be argued he strayed a little too far if he wanted to still get love from purists but drake made it clear he doesn’t care about that

He ain't write a thinkpiece about Drake and the legitimacy of hip hop

  • Jan 13, 2024

Drake obviously hip hop but Even the catchy melodic music Drake makes is at its core black music.

Calling him “pop” is just out of hate most times. He’s popular, makes hits but that’s where it stops.

All the influences in his music are hip hop / rnb / soul.
