Real, it’s not really an insult

Pop is an insult in Hip Hop.

in drake's case this hasn't really been the case for a good few years now

    it does tho

The man has been flooding the market with back to back albums till this day

    Clb 2021
    HNM 2022
    Her Loss 2022
    FATD 2023

& there’s nothing wrong with that but for him he‘s constantly dropping because he constantly wants to be in the conversation

That’s the formula of a pop artist

The end remarks made me think. He’s right on some level, what do we get from Drake/his music? Like from Kanye, I got some “socially conscious” stuff mixed in with your typical rap, but I think a main theme people get from Ye and his music is confidence & belief in self.

Idk what I get from Drake. I consume his music a lot but outside of “Drake n Drive” type memes earlier on, what am I really getting out his music? I gotta reflect on that

    Nostalgia

Drake’s music thematically is about nostalgia which is one of the reasons he’s as popular as he is today

Dunno why people act like you gotta have some super conscious meaning behind every single track you lay. Drake has plenty of relatable and inspirational music from his come up and although a lot of that is gone now (which makes complete sense considering his stature) there’s nothing wrong with good music for the sake of being good. Not everyone wants all their music to be deep some people just wanna put some s*** on that sounds good while chillin, goin to the gym, working, at a party whatever and Drake got tracks for all of it

Wayne definitely dove into the pop realm

Anyone saying he wasn’t at his peak don’t understand what it means to be pop

  • Jan 13, 2024

Like yea Drake doesn’t have the old stereotypical rapper background, and from that perspective very early on the odds were stacked against him, but pretty much after YM signing he skyrocketed and stayed up. He’s definitely been the guy or at least top 3 in any discussion since like 2013-2014 at this point. So that underdog angle is just a moot point in 2024.

He was literally asked a question and was annoyed about being asked it

He ain't write a thinkpiece about Drake and the legitimacy of hip hop

He was trying to be shady. Even the sarcastic way he said “likeable”

No cap this would be awesome

He could come back and fight Push

It can be argued he strayed a little too far if he wanted to still get love from purists but drake made it clear he doesn’t care about that

Yeah he's stopped caring about getting props from legends. I think Hov subs and Ye being self-destructively competitive player a part in that.

I mean maybe but that's a minority opinion. Atp drake probably has more pure rap songs than 3k but people are more likely to classify 3k or Lauryn as hip hop compared to drake and I don't think the reasoning is just the rnb thing

Drake is easily above Andre and Lauryn to me, I consider them group members and don’t even ever say their name outside of a group context

I’m fine with being the minority opinion. I know this s*** better than the majority and I’m not going to fall in line with overrating people without solo material, and also can’t pretend drake is really “hip hop” like that anymore. And I think it’s mostly because he’s canadian, idk if I’ve ever heard actual hip hop made outside the US

So when he was flooding the game with mixtapes and taking peoples beats he was pop? I can’t get behind that.

Drake not really pop either tbh. He’s hip hop through and through but the real reason a lot of people are reluctant to call him hip hop is because of his background tbh

    Not true at all lol

Lotta rappers under 25 are okay with it and they're the ones actually innovating instead of worrying about how real they look to oldheads
