An edit to me is the same as a fix as far as I'm concerned. A remix is different but it comes down to what the intent behind it is. If you just want to make an alternate version of what already exists that's cool, if you're trying to make a better version of what exists, that's not cool.

As far as your hypothetical question goes, I'm inclined to say just leave it alone, maybe it's not misplaced. We don't know, we weren't there. Even as insignificant as one snare is, there could be a reason for it being there, I don't feel comfortable with changing an artists vision in any way.

Sorry, I missed this line " remix is different but it comes down to what the intent behind it is. If you just want to make an alternate version of what already exists that's cool, if you're trying to make a better version of what exists, that's not cool." but I agree with that statement in that I agree it can be presumptous to assume we can produce Kanye's vision better than Kanye can. But that doesn't mean, imo, we should wholesale write off all fan edits altogether.

    What u mean? Pushas verse?
Malice verse is perfect but I think switching the beat made pushas sound a bit off because he didn't originally rap in that rhythm

Parts of both. It's not even a rhythm thing, it sounds offbeat. But being charitable, if that's the case why didn't they timestretch to fit better or just have push re-rap the verse?

Nah it’s more like the chef hears the complaints about the seasoning of his food; so the food gets sent back and another one comes back out. It still isn’t to my taste and is bland as f***. So I season it myself. Nah fam can’t put salt and pepper on a frutti di mare linguini cause the chef wants it this way LOL you clown go back to buzzfeed with this s***.

A chef comparable to Kanye in terms of reputation and quality wouldn't offer you any seasoning for personal use anyway bud. You getting what he gives you, take it or leave it. He's aware it's not for everyone. He makes what he wants. Pretending that you can make a "better" version of an artist's original vision doesn't even make sense. You can make something different, but adding drums to this track butchers the artist's original intent.

I'm saying this as someone who is OK with edits.

they're not writing off fan edits, they're writing off the mentality that a fan edit is objectively superior to the product the artist put out, which is what a lot of these fan edits thus far have been trying to do (made Use this Gospel amazing, made Closed on Sunday amazing)

it's a fault of assuming one's opinion to be a statement of objective quality, of conclusiveness, when in fact, most of these "i made it amazing" posts are truly saying something like "i made this preferable for my taste"

A chef of that level would know taste is subjective so would of course leave salt and pepper on the table for his guests, at least.

The fundamental difference in this is that food is made explicitly for consumer whereas music can be personal

    Agreed.

F*** no, man. Plenty of 3 star michelin restaurants don't even have a f***in menu. Chef gives you what he wants to give you and that's that. No room for customer input at all. At that level, the food itself is artistic expression. You think a painter is letting people paint over his s*** in an attempt to improve it?

Well said, I agree. That's why I came with a few perspectives i.e. edits vs remixes.

I think we're on the same page in that it's not about "making this better than Kanye did" but "here's a version that better appeals to my sensibilities".

I really don't have a problem with Push verse it has a different rhythm with his delivery but it's not off beat imo.

I'm not sure how you guys know Knaye isn't putting his full effort into this that's the kind of wild speculation I hate

What's wrong with the structure of the song? Other than the transition to Kenny G????

I’m gonna sound condescending but Kanye really pushed the album back by a month and we still got another album with underdeveloped ideas left and right. It might be unfair for me to say he’s not putting any effort into it but he’s just doing way too much rn to solely be focused on music and it’s showing.
And idk how to explain my problems with use this gospel, it just seems like clipse and Kenny come out of nowhere like they were copy and pasted and not even really meant for this

I mean, isn't that just ridiculously pretentious at that point? Like I think I can cook pretty good, but you gotta have an ego the size of Texas if you think your customers shouldn't be allowed to put salt or pepper on a dish to match their personal tastes. I couldn't see Gordon Ramsey, for example, taking that approach.

Artists of that caliber usually have egos a lot bigger than Texas, man. I'm sure Ramsey has restaurants of his own that are like that actually lol. It's not about your personal taste, it's about what they want to give to you

I see what you mean all I can say is people said the exact same thing about tlop and look at where we are today.

I do agree that some things couldn't be fully fleshed out due to time but most of that is on the lyrical side

Idk to me UTG is absolutely perfect both Verses were flames but I can see why you feel like they're just thrown on since the entire vibe of the song changed from LOA
