i don't know about the wider 'trajectory of hip-hop' but i do definitely feel that the last 5 years has paled in comparison to the 5 years before that in terms of quality albums.

How can we help this misguided youth without turning them off like our old heads did? Every generation is supposed to be better than the last so how do we do it effectively?

Tbh gotta find a way to make lyricism and anti commercialism cool again without coming off as preachy and bitter

i felt this way too but i’m skeptical without the mixtape era still there. streaming waters the whole scene down. hope we get some new legends outta nowhere tho

    It’s gonna happen

We got drake and cole tapes out of nowhere when they came out during the backpack blog era. When they came out old heads complained about that too after complaining about ringtone rap.

Coming up I remember brushing off everything they were saying as dust and outdated and championing for my era instead (Lil Pump, Lil Yachty saying f*** Tupac etc) but with the recent events of 6ix9ine and looking at the landscape of rap I’m starting to realize they had a point.

Listening to classic albums like Ready to Die, OB4CL, Illmatic the soundscapes and poetry displayed on these albums are light years ahead of the fast food music being put out today

I guess the moral of the story is to always listen to your elders

fast food music!!!! im glad you clocked none of this s*** lasts!. theres no soul to the music anymore. f*** numbers

hahaha explain why i should not listen to rap. i’m not saying every single one of them suck.
but what is carti doing that’s “brand new”? all of these guys are either the typical vibes rappers that rely on production and song atmosphere rather than lyrics (carti, tecca, tjay) or the typical new wave street rapper (dababy, choppa, etc) none of them are influencing the game like wayne, k dot, drake, cole, wiz, currensy, KRIT, or other front runners from the mixtape era.
Griselda is the best thing in music rn. almost everyone else is a clone

Drake has still been relevant for a decade tho?

drake pays homage to his favorite rappers all the time. from FL with love is partially a tribute to lollipop. i know it's different bc it's wayne but he's not the best example

First off, rappers need to get off these labels d*** and do real independent s*** again. Everyone wants a fabricated image now so they sign to a label and sell they soul. We need real movements in rap and it starts with independent labels.

If Kendrick dropped that song people would be calling him a messiah. His message was 100% accurate

he already said what cole said in an entire song in 4 bars

"And now we look at the competition as quick submission
They tappin’ out before we even get a chance to miss ‘em
What this about, is it money or skill?
Maybe it’s both and I got large amounts of it, it’s real"

Before backpack era we had a drought of good new rappers too til cud and wiz started popping.

  • May 12, 2020

We still have rappers like uzi Roddy and lil baby who have a lot of upside, just gotta be patient.

It’s crazy how dudes like Travis and Uzi are so obsessed with punk culture when acts like Jay,Dipset were really more punk than them. Niggas just too commercial now, when you really think about it,the soul sample era back then was way more rebellious than the trap era.

Niggas was taking classic, chopping em up and rapping whatever came to they mind vs dudes getting on a computer and making “type” beats. Everyone just thinks being loud and obnoxious is punk but it’s really not.

    everything is in cycles

tik tok music is just ringtone rap

by 2022 all of this s*** will be over and the new kings will be appointed. then the entire cycle will reset

there is nothing to worry about

The cycle was broken by streaming

There is no more mixtape scene that birthed our generation’s legends

How will the next generation do it without the mixtape scene?
