Yeah he’s wrong for the most part
Hip hop is dominated by darker skinned acts, like if u a lightskin nigga rapping tough it doesn’t feel as authentic, and that’s just cause of the way the black community was brought up to think of each other.
However, if you a lightskin nigga making mainstream hip hop, and trying to appeal to women and a more non-black audience like a Drake, J Cole, etc. you’d def have an easier time achieving that than a dark skin artist
in Wale’s case specifically, he doesn’t rap tough, he mostly raps to appeal to women & a more mainstream audience. so he’s not really wrong

That's actually something I didn't think about.
I guess it somewhat depends on the lane you're in.

Oh yeah, I didn’t see the part where he said it hurt his career. And you’re right he does make that type of music
Are there any darkskin acts we can think of that are in Wale’s lane that found more success than him?

Lupe? If he counts

can’t really name them tbh

literally anybody OP named
none of them in Wale’s lane, Sean the only one close though
literally anybody OP named
The only one he named that’s closest to Wale lane is Big Sean
The rest of them haven’t really consistently made some Lotus Flower Bomb type s***
In regards to rap, dark skin niggas always been some of the most popular. Yes we've had super popular light skin niggas like LL and Drake, but the genre has been heavily dominated by dark skin black men.
Wale just being bitter and throwing shots at Drake and/or Cole.
yes and no
i don't think it's a big issue for male hip-hop artists but it's still prevalent for women (unless you tinashe )
i do think it was a bigger issue back in the day. wu-tang pushed meth heavy because he was the lightest member of the group.
Colorism is definitely real and it is something present in music. However in rap that's not really the case. Both dark skin and light skin niggas have been able to have very prosperous and iconic careers.
Wale need to stop tryna co-opt that rhetoric in some weird attempt to escape the reality that people just don't f*** with him as much as his contemporaries. Many of them are also dark skin black men.
Wale musical fell off and his personality helped seal the fate.
If either he had a better personality or had way better consistency, he would be as big as cole.

yeah defs, if we bring media outside of rap into the whole convo, thats where things get a little problematic
I consider Lupe lightskin, or, at most brownskin
Ah ok I'd say Brownskin, nothing like light skin tbh

don't think it's prevalent for either tbh. female rap just isnt that big. there will always only be about 5 or less relevant
