That’s why I put it in question marks, it’s a solid point in general but Wale is so...Wale that he is a big part of it

if he was lighter he wouldn’t need to connect to the streets

Drake needed to connect to the streets too tho to be in the position he's in, you absolutely need that demographic to eat in rap, regardless of your skin color

colorism exists. naming a few examples that made it despite colorism existing doesn’t prove your point

In rap it really doesn’t. Most of the biggest rappers ever are darkskin men. The white/lightskin ones are the exceptions, not the rule.

Here's Wale's problem. When he first came out he was essentially (besides Lupe and Kanye) one of the first hipster rappers. I was in Highschool around that time and I remember clearly Wale was ahead of the pack until Cudi and Drake came into the picture. Wale still had momentum and respect in the underground/blog scene. He was fusing the go-go sound with hip hop and other genres.
And then all of sudden he goes to Rick Ross and it seemed like he abandoned his base audience for a more mainstream audience mostly aimed at females.
    That's where he f***ed up.

He may have thought the hipster route was corny but that was what blew him up. Once he started doing radio/club hits and love songs he fell off and became bitter.

it exists very much in the boxes rappers are put in

dark skin rappers rap about street s*** & violence, light skin rappers rap about relationships & emotions

Wale is dark skin rapping about light skin topics

  • Nov 28, 2020

Wale sabotaged himself because he wanted to be the greatest all around rapper. In result he pigeons holed himself and nobody gives a f*** about his music anymore

I do believe there is colorism in the music industry and the world in general that plays a big part in careers. But Wale is just wack and forgot what it was we all liked him for to begin with

Yachty’s lyrics on his biggest songs are about violence & f***in your b**** (you need to stay up out the streets if you can’t take the heat, i just want you for one night, we gon turn this s*** to Columbine, etc.)

G Herbo an exception bc of certain people’s ChiRaq fetish (not a knock to Herbo, he fye)

Uzi raps about guns & f***in your b**** if you listen to his lyrics, bc this is a discussion about the boxes rappers are put into music-wise from colorism, not what they wear

X was an exception when he came up, but then he moved into less violent lyrics & rapped about relationships & feelings in his later career. plus, you gotta remember that rap as a whole has become more mainstream, and a lot of these boxes & walls are being torn down in recent years. they weren’t when Wale blew up.

Carti raps about guns & f***in your b**** when his lyrics make sense

Tyler literally blew up by being edgy & rapping about murder & other violent topics

saying it’s worse in other scenarios doesn’t mean it doesn’t still exist in the scenario being discussed

I just think wale didn't make music that so many ppl want to hear. I don't think white people make a huge deal about lightskin vs dark skin like we do as black ppl.

  • In my opinion no. One of the most successful rappers of all time was a fat dark skinned nigga (Plus there's numerous dark skinned successful rappers throughout history). Now outside of rap & in the real world, absolutely.
