Colorism definitely isn't as big with male artists compared to female artists, since so many men can have hugely successful careers while being ugly as hell to begin with. Looks never TRULY dictated a man's career.

But colorism definitely exists, it's just to the extent in some areas that's debatable. On a global scale and crossing over to pop/mainstream it's definitely probably there to a notable extent.

If we're talking male rappers who the black community is listening to, then yeah, colorism plays less of a role at that point.

There have been more dark skin super stars opposed to light skin ones though, we clearly shouldn’t dismiss colorism because it’s very prevalent but in Wale’s case it’s a reach

If anything light skin men are at a disadvantage because rap is very hyper masculine & light colored males being associated with sensitivity for the longest

Colorism is definitely real and it is something present in music. However in rap that's not really the case. Both dark skin and light skin niggas have been able to have very prosperous and iconic careers.

Wale need to stop tryna co-opt that rhetoric in some weird attempt to escape the reality that people just don't f*** with him as much as his contemporaries. Many of them are also dark skin black men.

like Bernie X said on the first page, dark skin rappers see more success rapping about guns while light skin rappers see more success rapping about relationships

colorism still exists in rap. it heavily influences the lane in which an artist will find success.

I honestly haven’t listened to Wale in years so I don’t know what type of music he makes now

  • Nov 28, 2020

How many popular lightskin rappers are there out now? Honestly can't name as many as dark skin rappers.

    Nah but like bro

The thing about Uzi thats so interesting is that he acts all cute and sensitive in person, but in his music he raps about murking niggas and dogging hoes. That’s the thing that ppl find interesting ab him

who's light skinned n seeing success making music that's similar to wale's? i can stretch and say drake, but i don't personally find their music to be too similar. maybe i don't understand wale's perspective entirely and drake would fit in the category that wale's talkin about. who else tho?

  • @internetcowboy dont u have a similar opinion?

    Idk tho

I think Wale can name 1000 reasons why his career didn’t take off. His attitude on social media, the memes people make about him being boring and lame, (maybe) the quality of his music, etc. AND the fact that he’s darkskin. It may have hurt his career but it’s definitely not the only thing that did

Uzi is dark skin and isn’t hyper masculine and has one of the best selling albums of the year

Because rap has progressed & is accepting less hyper masculine dark skinned artists due to a more diverse audience

Wale got exposure during the last remnants of rap’s gangster persona obsession

Are there any darkskin acts we can think of that are in Wale’s lane that found more success than him?

His lane of socially conscious rap? Kendrick. Outkast. 2Pac. Kanye.

  • Nov 28, 2020

Colorist exists but it’s not taken into the account as much on making or breaking a rapper in the actual rap scene

Socially conscious, but still sexy sometimes, and relatable to women

Kanye def tapped into that lane, but it’s not his only style so I wouldn’t say him. Pac definitely is in that lane, wouldn’t say Kendrick is, but maybe Outkast is for sure
