claiming a genre is dead bc it sells less than the previous year is hilarious
The genre of hip hop will never die especially if we're strictly talking quality.
But, if mainstream hip hop is increasingly reliant on stars from previous generations who are getting up their in age for commercial relevance, that's not really a good sign for the future of mainstream hip hop.
Also, if the newer generation mainstream rappers can't drop quality GKMC/Take Care/DS2 level albums and people have to turn to the underground or middle aged OG's like Nas and Killer Mike for quality music, that's not a good sign either.
But hey...I'm not Nostradamus. Anything is possible.

Mainstream hiphop isn’t reliant on stars from previous generations, again another disingenuous take.
31/43 number one rap albums since 2020 have been from current generation artists

I'm just disappointed that more rappers didn't care about hip hop's 50th anniversary or at least that's what it felt like anyway

Which rappers who debuted in the last 6 years(basically 2017 to now) are dominating the genre rn?

there’s one obvious answer to this….
Nas said hip hop is dead in 2006
And in 2023 he dropped Magic 3
Our prophet is always there for hip hop don’t worry

It's actually not so obvious.
You could be talking about Uzi(albeit I always consider 2016 to be his real debut year), Lil Baby, Carti, Doja, Youngboy, etc.

i was talking about carti specifically (although you can make the case that 2015 was his breakthrough) say what you want but he is the most influential rapper in that 6 year period

Carti has had one song resembling a hit ever- and it was just another Pierre Bourne beat that hit
His sons do like 20-50k first week

the relative commercial decline of 'hip hop' in the mainstream is def a data point worth commenting on imho especially after a few years where it was basically the dominant force in popular music. but i agree that people decrying the death of hip hop as a whole seem to be missing the point or maybe even revealing unintentionally that their enjoyment of the genre is massively tied to commercial performance and prominence. or in some cases simply trying to relive their own key memories which were undoubtedly soundtracked by some big artist or song that they will always fail to truly recapture.
the death of the 'monoculture' is definitely a real thing though, kinda surprised it took so long honestly
this whole rap dead thing is so overstated. Idk why yall let billboard tell yall whats going up. Like the whole way they determine album sales is made up by them and yall let them trick yall into thinking that a whole genre is dead despite amazing projects coming out this year. Honestly this whole using numbers to determine who's best is some nerd s***. Yes mainstream rap is stale right now mfs acting like it wasnt like this back in 08'-09' before drake, wale, kid cudi started coming up.
