Anytime someone believes their religious text in a literal sense it screams non-critical thinker

Red flag when it comes to what?

    Critical thinking

I find it hard to believe someone can think AND believe religion in a literal sense

When you start thinking one of the first things you do is go... “Wait a minute.. this religion s*** my parents taught me doesn’t make any sense

People that don’t ever reach this point tend to not think much, for one reason or another

Depends on how they go about their beliefs. It is possible to be aware that you believe in something that is irrational and admit that the only reason you believe so is because of faith and faith only. If someone is able to separate their faith from a rational discussion, I wouldn’t judge their critical thinking skills.

Ah so to have in-tact critical thinking skills but being unable to apply them to your religion

You’re right. This would not be a lack of critical thinking, but some other character deficiency

    Yes

Being a religious fundamentalist doesn't mean taking the text literally, it just means you stick with very traditional/restrictive interpretations of it (which can sometimes mean taking the text literally)

But yeah it's always a red flag.

  • May 24, 2021

    Absolutely

Being traditional over positively progressive is stupid and actually the cause for a lot of f*** s*** that happens on a personal and professional level. Also, sometimes a sign of immaturity

  • U should define red flag

  • May 24, 2021

    I dont think so
I dont like to judge people until I get to see their whole personality / character
So just that alone wouldn't be a red flag for me

I’m Christian and yes, s***s weird

Ain’t finna follow the Bible 100%

Racism and sexism live in some of those texts

I got love for my black brothers and sisters
and I got love and respect for all women. Gay people are of equal standing as a straight male that I am

And I’m not gonna let the Bible tell me I can’t respect and love them

Because why would they separate critical thinking from their spiritual beliefs?

    Isn’t that willful ignorance?

only if they use religion as an excuse to be ignorant (but moderate religious people do that as well)
otherwise idrc as long as they don't force their beliefs on others
