I mean yea definitely and drake is the complete opposite. he constantly needs to appeal to that wide audience which is why he won't lock down on a single sound and won't go niche lyrically
its just different ends of the spectrum
thankful to be someone who enjoys rap of all types
what specifically?
specificity plays a BIG part in musical depth
it's not necessarily about comparing the emotional weight of a personal experience each artist is going through, but writing and describing things more vague and simple is just less touching and therefore nowhere near as deep as the opposed way of writing
i think the crucial point is the subjectivity of artistic depth as someone already mentioned itt
the comparison of innocence of the child to someone not caring about rap is like stupid asf here
who doesnt care about rap?
This is just the difference between material reality and immaterial reality, depression vs self-fulfillment, thats how I see how different they are if we are just talking rap
Beats, now thats subjective, you can hate avant-garde s***, or hate bland trap beats
i honestly kind of agree with op, at least in the sense that Drake captures, perhaps inadvertently, something universal and timely, yet his writing is so broad that it's not exactly a great achievement. at least he was rapping over fake Burial beats originally which was half the appeal.

mark fisher is that you
he still has the best writing on drake ever tbf
I don't remember what I've read much but I swear he made that same Burial comparison which I'd never really thought about before

Specificity can play a large role in musical depth but it isn't required. theres a difference between vague & simple vs saying what needs to be said & nothing more.
michael jackson is the best at making songs with high depth & low specificity.
sure you can be basic and straightforward and clear in your lyrics but when it comes out as “i feel good sometimes i don’t” then you can’t really be praised as some intricate deep writer when you’re using elementary everyday vocabulary
what makes him different from the language we use at the end of the day if he’s at that point!
complexity doesn't equal depth. drake is NOT intricate.
reframe last sentence and it will make sense

!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PivWY9wn5psno one but the artist alone decides "what needs to be said", there isn't a too much or too abstract
i, as a consumer of their art, can only decide if the way they chose to bring emotion on paper resonates with me or not

oh word, didn't know that! guess id say MJ & co since he also didn't produce record it etc, its a team effort. thanks
overall i mainly care about the final product, whoever made it is secondary
