How does he compare to Tolstoy? Absolutely loved War and Peace when I didn’t think I would. Are 19th century Russian authors the goats?
Kendrick : Kanye = Dostoevsky : Tolstoy
They really tried to ban my guy
The part when they fakely execute him in the gulag was brazy
I have a friend who's a linguist and can speak russian, she done some research on which is the best English translation of The Idiot because she was gifting it to me
This what she decided on. I highly recommend
Actually all of Dostevsky’s major works from C&P to Brothers K are supposed to be read in order of release.
So C&P->The Idiot->Demons->Brothers K.
There’s a thematic throughline within those novels and they get progressively more complex as they go along.
Damn I didn’t know that.
I’ve only read Karamazov because a friend gifted it to me, and it was life changing. I’ll have to read C&P eventually and work my way back.
What translation y’all recommend for Brothers? I liked Pevears translation of C&P but hated their notes from underground translation

tolstoy is a western cuck dosto is real rossiyan
tbh
the family relationsship they have is just unmatched in any shape of form until now. And there are some passages which are the funniest ive read in a book and i didnt believe it at first. When Ivan went crazy goat chapter, or the jesus chapter goat, the end obviously goat, the begin goat. Totally unmatched greatness, this book could be written today with some changes and would still be the best.
The book is so woke i cant even comprehend it, its really timeless
Finished The Brothers Karamazov recently and honestly it kind of changed my life.
Not only has it opened my eyes to just how affecting literature can be (I’ve read a lot of great books but the breadth and depth of this one is just next level), but philosophically it also changed my perspective on faith, doubt, and the existential tension between the two.
The way that Dostoyevsky can personify these deep philosophical concepts in characters that simultaneously feel so real, so human is incredible.
Super excited to start on C&P.
