Lmao, it is honestly the hardest part of Russian lit lmao

It’s basically like this — first name; patronymic** (fathers name); surname.

Ex, the protagonist of the Brothers K: Alexei Fyodorovich Karamazov

Alexei is his first name, Fyodorvich is his patronymic, and Karamzov is his surname. To make it even more complicated, they often have nicknames and are referred to half the time by their real names and half the time by their nicknames. For instance, Alexei is often called Aloysha or Alyoshenka.

** the patronymic name has a slightly different ending if you are a female.
For instance, in Crime and Punishment, Rodion’s patronymic as a male is ‘Romanovich’ whilst for his sister it is ‘Romanova’

Thanks for this. Was trying to make sense of all the names and their ordering.

    Dostoyevsky
    I love his dramatic writing.

I only read poor folk, C&P, some short stories and notes from the underground.

Not sure where to start next. Would The Idiot be a good book to read next?

Defo, and the Alan Myers translation I posted on page 2

Currently reading The Idiot and it’s definitely a change of pace from C&P.

Much more off the cuff structurally with A LOT of (intentionally) meandering dialogue.

It’s definitely one of those books that can make you go cross eyed if you try to plow through it.

need to finish C&P got to the crime and didn’t care for the punishment think it was due to me reading it on my phone, fiction books are much more enjoyable on hand will cop it if i ever see the book

    cliffsnotes.com/literature/c/crime-and-punishment/book-summary
I used this site to help me understand more the story with its summaries of each chapter and short descriptions of the characters that helped me move through the patronyms.
In some instances the book will remind you of BCS.

Really want to get into him, notes from the underground seems the most interesting but I have a feeling it’s a difficult read, so might start with the idiot.

Yeah that’s definitely a difficult read.

I once started with notes but couldn’t finish it after only 10 pages The first part is the most tough to get through.

Read Crime & Punishment as my first finished Dostoyevsky and loved it. I’d recommend reading that one first. See below a link for the best and newest translation. In October on the whole Russian Lit series you’ll get €5 off.

After that I finished Notes and appreciated it way more. Still needs a re read tho.

I’ll go Idiot > C&P > Notes > whatever I feel like. Could also be stopping 50 pages into idiot tho if I find it boring 😅

  • Sep 25, 2022

So I’m reading crime and punishment for the first time and the Garnett translation made it so hard to follow and it was boring. I picked up the Oliver Ready translation and this one is SO much better. I’m hooked

the underground man is the result of stewing in the thought processes seen in this picture above. the inevitable result of a zero-risk lifestyle. notes can help escape the "things will get better when i'm older" mindset, and also dispel the temptatious, NEET romanticism that's prevalent across the internet. of course, it offers nothing in the way of how exactly to unfuck your life, but as a precautionary warning - it's unparalleled

Read in two weeks during last summer like 100-200 pages, dropped it because patronyms made me nervous and confused.
Gave it another shot during january holidays and I finished the remaining part in two weeks early this year, was hooked to it.
By this pace think I'm gonna finish Demons in 2-3 years tho, s*** isn't exactly my thing and if I had to place it in his bibliography so far, it would be without doubts the lowest.
