yea nobody does a milli anymore
Only 4 rappers in history have done it to begin with lol. And the only rapper in the last decade to have an iconic run like 50, Em or Wayne did it (Drake)
what do you think scorpion wouldve done if it dropped in lets say 2010
2010 probably 1.2m ish
But if we go back pre Internet piracy that’s getting close to 2m+
Think of it this way
My most streamed album of this year is After Hours and I’ve listened to songs from it about 500 times (song plays)
I’m an absolute outlier in how much I’ve listened to this album. I’m a huge Weeknd fan and it’s one of my favorite albums this year
I haven’t even contributed HALF of an album sale to The Weeknd yet
But if I could only get it by CD you bet I’m contributing a full album sale on the first week
They will continue to decline if more rappers keep making albums just for streaming numbers instead of focusing on making a great album that you want to listen to from beginning to end.
Feels like ppl just take 4-5 songs from an album and make their own playlist these days anyway instead of running it front to back

Fair point but theres also many people who wouldnt even consider buying the album that would of streamed 1-2 songs off of it. And by many I mean Millions, 1500 single streams is an album, it adds up / works both ways
Only 4 rappers in history have done it to begin with lol. And the only rapper in the last decade to have an iconic run like 50, Em or Wayne did it (Drake)
that's better than 0 and the way the industry is looking nobody has the potential to do it either

Agree BUT I think you’re underestimating how many streams it takes to get album sales
Let’s say people stream 3 songs from the album on average during the first week
It would take 500 MILLION unique people to net 1m album sales in the first week
That’s impossible since it’s US sales

I dont think thats about sales tbh, i think its about momentum. Atm theres noone that will have a run like the 4 I just named. But we still early as f*** in the decade. im sure someone will do it

also now tho more people have the ability to listen tho was my thought.
so someone who wouldn't have bought can listen now
It’s worth pointing out that while sales are down the music industry is MASSIVELY better off than it has been at any other point in the 2000s
And streaming is still growing incredibly quickly album sales are gonna rise by 15% per year for the next 5 years or so

I understand that, but 1M+ in a week has only happened 6 times in HH to begin with. Thats not really the standard yknow?

I think that it is still massively in favor of pure sales
It takes so so so many casual fans streams to contribute album sales

No but that’s largely because Hip Hop wasn’t the dominant genre at any point during those eras
If we were in an album sale era adjusted to be at the same point as the 90s to early 2000s then I think Kanye and Kendrick would have both comfortably done it
This would actually be a good idea for a thread I should look at how total consumption has changed and adjust years to figure out what certain albums would’ve done in different eras
Super busy rn though so maybe down the line

By nature because the way we consume music changes so often, the amount of album sales is gonna change over time
In 5-10 years time I’d put money that we’re gonna start to see albums doing 800k+ off streaming alone and maybe even some 1m+ albums just from streaming
In the meantime though I think Adele is now the only artist who can hit 1m
