By nature because the way we consume music changes so often, the amount of album sales is gonna change over time

In 5-10 years time I’d put money that we’re gonna start to see albums doing 800k+ off streaming alone and maybe even some 1m+ albums just from streaming

In the meantime though I think Adele is now the only artist who can hit 1m

    hmm 🤔

In terms of people hitting 1m in the near future yall need to look at Scorpion to understand where sales are gonna be with the new bundle rules

I’m of the opinion that Scorpion is the biggest album of the 2010s. Adele is the exception but she’s almost in a different category given the pure sales/streaming divide.

Scorpion was streamed 746m times first week. The second highest ever is Carter V with 433m. There is a gap between these two that is larger than any album other than 12 in history has ever had first week. Scorpions SECOND week is the 6th highest streaming week ever.

    And scorpion didn’t break 800k

We aren’t getting a 1m plus album (other than Adele) for a long long time

btw Travis is still gonna do good pure #'s

signed CD's the new wave, y'all saw his latest single was still doing some big ass pure #'s and that was without bundles.

for albums yes, not for singles, bundles for singles (digital bundles) have been gone for a minute now.

he got to #1 off of signed CD sales.

Not enough to get 1m+ pure sales are still declining every year

Even someone like Taylor is only gonna pull in 500k pure at absolute complete best case from now and she’s nowhere near big enough on streaming to get 500k

And as streaming grows more pure sales decline more

It’s pretty cyclic, album sales relative to however people consume at the time

The streaming “era” as we know it didn’t really start until 2017, so give it a couple more years (or even just a year and a half) and we’ll be settled in to the point where huge first week sales are multiple instances of 600-800k in one year

Also, we don’t have a fresh crop of “trusted” superstars in music yet, it’s still only the established names from the early 2010s that can capture the zeitgeist in that way. It’s still a transition period for the new superstars. Again, give it a couple years and the next group of superstars will do those huge numbers I’m sure

    Interesting

I think artists are gonna find ways round the bundling rules
Stuff like forcing a pop up to add a copy of the album “for only $3.99” and etc

yup, it's how Taylor has been going #1 every other week, she drops a bunch of signed CD's whenever the charts look weak enough.

I definitley dont think a rap artist we know of right now will do a M (slight chance Post Malone - inb4 argument about him being rap)

But I think someone will come up in the decade with one of those iconic runs that do a M first week

Trippie redd for pegasus has 2 target bonus songs on the CD version ONLY also instead of pre orders of vinyls they're shipped first week of the album now and have been incentivizing fans to buy it more (he sold out on them a few days ago), I've also been noticing his team getting fans used to merch drops as a source of income for him because of no shows right now and its working, he legit sold out of majority of his drops for the last 5 months.

It will be interesting to see what else they do and what other artist will do, maybe even bring the CD or itunes exclusive back.
