Yeah because writing a decent melody would be too pedestrian. After The Bends his pretentiousness prevented him from writing good melodies
Delete your account and your entire digital footprint. You know nothing about music theory. The extent of your music knowledge is appreciating power chords and basic chord progressions

Completely false lol. On the contrary I prefer more complex chord progressions and structures and I already gave Radiohead their credit for that itt.
Why you talking about chords in response to my critique on the melodies? What theory do I need to be conscious of to better appreciate Thom’s seemingly improvised, directionless wailing?
I’m saying. Just let me enjoy my mystery music in peace.

That’s just jazz, baby.
@op from what I've heard just don't expect them to be consistent or to have great albums
Each one I've heard has a couple great songs then mostly mid

Thom Yorke doesn’t even have that weird of a ear for melodies lmaoooo his vocal melodies are pretty standard as far as notes, its usually just in a higher register and soft tone
you said that s*** like he bjork or something

You may be right but something about the melodies and singing on Ok Computer feels very meandering to me, the album usually puts me to sleep even though I really respect the production and musicianship

Thom has an implicit tact for mixing modes, and utilizing key changes in an often tonally ambiguous way when it comes to making melodies. Here's a good video that delves into some of it
Tit for tat - what examples of "directionless" wailing come to mind for you? People like flea are on record saying that Thom's recording process is often improvised and cerebral, but who's recording process isn't? Thom has plenty of songs where he isn't even singing more than 4-5 notes on the whole track (Jigsaw, Dawn Chorus) which, to me, speaks to how unique his angle is when working to build on top of a melody with his voice. If his wailing was as directionless as you're stating, he wouldn't take as much advantage of space/sparceness as he so often does.

I will watch the video, you’re making some valid points
Tbh I’m mostly going off memory and my perception of Ok Computer. I think I like the songs from other projects where he uses less notes and more space. But something about that album feels like rambling to me on most tracks, it kind of blends together and just doesn’t really catch my ear
I also tried to listen to some of Kid A and it sounded so pretentious
It is, but it’s still great.
it takes a lot to truly be a pretentious artist.
Liturgy dropping manifestos to go with every album explaining how it relates to metaphysics comes to mind

I was about to say it’s basically pretentious millennial mid

I know this isn’t the music but Thom comes off so insufferable, pretentious and whiny in this Kid A is my favorite though

For the record I don’t rank OKC as highly in their discography as most others do
I’m not sure how to help you, OP.
I got into them the first time I heard OK Computer, so since that didn’t work I’m not sure what to recommend

For someone who’s politics make him nothing more than a s***lib thom yorke used to do a lot of moral grandstanding. I wont take that away from you either and is a major grievance i have with him as a person rather than an artist
