Bobby_96Unpopular opinion but I always preferred It Was Written and Life After Death to both.
But, if it boils down to these 2, then it's Illmatic for me easily.
I don’t think that’s an unpopular opinion. Everyone considers life after death the better big album. Also a good portion of folks like IWW more than illmatic.

BanditoBigs beat selection and flow is what set him above and for me. However, I could argue that illmatic is the greatest hip hop album of all time.

Surprised this isn't more of a common debate in rap, considering they came out around the same time and both are NY classics. Illmatic aura hard to beat
I was telling someone the other day that its weird that ready to die is known as classic but it really should be praised like illmatic. Its somehow a known classic and still slept on. S*** is a mbdtf level album. I dont think anyone can argue that s***.
