It's up there
He’s wise but it’s literally a coming of age album the album is about becoming an adult in his environment from nearly start to finish coming of age is content based not sound based
i disagree
coming of age to me means character development
and that didn't happen on illmatic imo
he just shared what his life and environment was like
that doesn't mean it was a coming of age story imo
i also feel like coming of age implies teenage s***
you'd have no idea nas was a teen when he wrote that s***

There’s no character development on the album? The whole album is literally about Nas’s transition from a rough street kid, to a conscious adult man with a child.
“ I woke up early on my born day; I'm 20, it's a blessin'
The essence of adolescence leaves my body, now I'm fresh and
My physical frame is celebrated 'cause I made it
One quarter through life, some godly-like thing created”
“ When I was young at this I used to do my thing hard
Robbin' foreigners, take they wallets, they jewels and rip they green cards
Dipped to the projects, flashin' my quick cash
And got my first piece of ass, smokin' blunts with hash
Now it's all about cash in abundance
Niggas I used to run with is rich or doin' years in the hundreds
I switched my motto; instead of sayin', "Fuck tomorrow!"
That buck that bought a bottle could've struck the lotto”
Definition of growth and character development.
And Illmatic does have a teen experience, it might not be your teen experience but it’s a lot of peoples. As far as how it sounds it doesn’t sound like a teen made it because it’s great but Pure Heroine doesn’t sound like a teen made it either and there’s no rule that says you have to make a coming of age album as a teen anyways
“Yo, they call me Nas, I'm not your legal type of fella
Moët drinking, marijuana smoking street dweller
Who's always on the corner, rolling up blessed
When I dress, it's never nothing less than Guess
Cold be walking with a bop and my hat turned back
Love committing sins and my friends sell crack
This nigga raps with a razor, keep it under my tongue
The school drop-out, never liked the s*** from day one
'Cause life ain't s*** but stress, fake niggas, and crab stunts
So I guzzle my Hennessy while pulling on mad blunts
The brutalizer, crew de-sizer, accelerator
The type of nigga who be pissing in your elevator
Somehow the rap game reminds me of the crack game
Used to sport Bally's and Cazals with black frames
Now I'm into fat chains, s***and TECs
Fly new chicks and new kicks, Heines and Becks”
This whole verse is Nas’s teen experience, and a lot of people relate to going from that to being a father taking care of responsibility than they do Lorde’s album.
There’s plenty of character development in Memory Lane, The World Is Yours, even the last verse of One Love and It Ain’t Hard To Tell. And Half Time, One Time 4 Ya Mind, and Represent all show off his teenage experience. I can keep providing specific lyric samples but I have to go to the dentist
I appreciate the breakdowns itt but let’s keep it a buck:
Illmatic is being denied as coming of age compared to Pure Heroine because pop culture got us thinking coming of age has to mean white

Right
Or at the very least that anything street can’t be coming of age

This is also why what BSK is doing is revolutionary fr

Thank you fr that is really important to us to kinda show our side of s*** bc we always left out the convos
is there such thing as a coming of age album for adults? this is prolly it. what it has to say about consent and standing up for urself is very inspiring
Shameika is the only song i can maybe get through tbh
of this generation it is certainly up there
if bravado was actually on the album then yes

i mean there's just a bias because people on this forum weren't alive when illmatic came out
it's a great pick for sure
I've always considered Bravado, The Love Club, Million Dollar Bills, Biting Down and Swingin Party as part of PH
Pure Heroine (Extended Edition) 🤷🏻♂️
Yes
listening to ribs going thru high school was crazy I'm sorry for anyone who couldn't experience this
They got Driver’s License and ocean eyes
