It is almost like being an artist and earning money through art is a more of a lottery then a real job.
No way
This is why when bigger artist say “just tour” it sounds so disingenuous because touring for smaller artist is a different world.
Well this is something else I didn’t know. Obviously it makes a ton of sense. Bigger artists with more capital are able to make these type of investments into all the touring gear etc. What really sucks is what she spoke on about it not even financially worth it even if she had sold out every show! Imagine… you just finish a sold out tour and you have nothing monetarily to show for it. What type of existence is that. I love music, I’m a music producer myself, but sometimes when I look at the landscape of this industry I feel like it isn’t a place conducive for stability. And maybe it never has been but damn man I wish we could figure some ways to get it right.
It’s over
What is a hard reset in your mind? @op
Think most artists get a monthly salary to survive but I could be wrong

I replied to a similar question with: “scorched earth “ but lemme elaborate lol
I mentioned in other threads but lately i been reading into anarchist thought/theory (im not well read on it so no assumptions. I’m waiting til I know more before I start making bold claims on s***) and honestly, this entire system especially as far as music industry goes was always just…rotten from the ground up.
More artists relatively had a chance decades ago but (if you had tv1 and had unsung) you still had artists fall beneath the cracks even back then. And label heads lowkey had more power back then even on a psychological level (why I’d kill Berry Gordy with my bare hands f\*\*\* em)
Even all the minor alternative plans that musicians have tried to cook up all fall flat cause they still have to subscribe to some sort of capitalist process (which imo has been the same process that has done so much damage to art in general)
I feel the only real solution to all of this is essentially a hard reset. But not just for the music industry but for society as we currently see it cause a lot of industries (we seen with these strikes) are reaching the tipping point.
The way we living just isn’t sustainable. I saw madison mcferrin make an ig post about a real life scary and tiring situation involving merch shipment that…i just dont know why there’s no mental care put in for artists. I know people personally that have been on tours with superstars that had panic attacks and breakdowns cause of all the pressure.
I think whatever happens this decade will determine a lot of how humanity in all facets of life (and the industries they participate in) will push forward.

Fam it’s a long process to book a local show in nyc RIGHT NOW lol (goin through it bad lol)

And when you get booked, you damn near gotta weigh the exposure vs the payment.
Bigger artist should def be giving them a “free” look but that’s another conversation for another day I guess.

Transparency post (currently sick and in bed recovering so i gots the TIME today):
So earlier this year I was offered to be on a tour playing keys in a band (disclaimer: local west coast band, i do NOT say this to flex if you are a musician and know how to network, it’s actually feasible to get hit up to play in other states for other bands but make sure you dont get jerked financially) the west coast this year but fam the 12 dates werent even all confirmed when they sent the email. ( 🚩 #1)
The show prices was only $100 and the per diem was $25 (mind you, you gotta automatically subtract 15 for whatever food you can possibly get that day. Add the fact I been a lifelong vegan, that s*** gon damn near double especially if the state aint got a heavy vegan population) ( 🚩#2)
I ask about housing all the guy replied with “airbnb or the cribs of whoever we know if they are in the city” ( 🚩#3 )
So I politely turn it down (money reasons playing a big part, economically im at a loss spending more than what I’m making back if i decided to play with this band on the west coast)
Like…this is how smaller artists really gotta thug it out dawg lol. (And the “band sleeping in a van” is a decades old tale. A musician friend told me it’s worth it if you doing it with people you love/enjoy playing with. I didnt know these niggas otherwise I have nooooooo problem with the grind, but mentally it gotta feed me too.)
She can literally do a PA
This applies to all artists that have backup musicians
Unless you’re Beyonce or thundercat you can literally just do a PA and people will be happy
PA?

A PA System is fire but every venue surprisingly doesn’t have the capabilities for it

Yea seems like a raw deal and being on a whole other coast. F*** that 😂. My brother who plays keys and produces on a small scale always negotiated rooms, food and transportation into their asking price. As well as whatever they charge to perform.

Santigold did the same thing too in 2022. She said it cost too much to tour and canceled it.
But word is she's gearing up to tour again now.
