Cultural Impact
Sales (which only matter to dweebs who have no taste of their own but I know that’s important to y’all)
Long lasting stylistic influence
Everything important in rap comes from something that began in the 90’s or 2000’s yes even all of Wayne’s offsprings that kinda suck after Thug
But none of these guys would never matter if the guys before them didn’t pave the way and create this style of music,
Just because you think world play and rap scheme is more evident doesn’t mean everyone else does
I disagree i think rap is a form of music and the poetry type rap is more of a category of rap
At this point... it is better not to overthink it but the thread title is very ignorant to tha roots of this shyt and no im not speaking on sugarhill gang gotdamnit.
Okay but what really is your argument is it’s in agreement with my argument?

A album that's predominantly focus on a vibe from melody and hooks over lyrical ability shouldn't be considered a "classic" though.
That’s kind of the theme of what I’m talking about ijs
Right, but you aren't helping yourself by acting like something being lyrical applies to an entire song.
The idea of how lyrical something is works on a line-by-line basis, not a general evaluation of all lines in a verse or song. Which is why lots of artists have songs that display both technical and lyrical ability, despite the two being different concepts.
Generalizing whole songs or artists as one or the other also puts unreasonable limits on them, which is obviously not a good thing.
It's also a weird position to take when the poster child of "lyrical miracle" Rap, Eminem, owes a great deal of his success to simpler, "vibier" hooks in his songs. The entire idea behind a hook in songwriting itself is the opposite of what people describe as "lyrical miracle" rapping — yet it's found across the entire genre.
That's the case you should be making, instead of drawing hard lines in the sand where they don't need to exist.

But by going by how the old songs did it did the lyrics match up to the vibes of the song? Even tho y’all clowning about sugar hill it was all over the place
So what makes up a rap song?
One guy talks about what he’s doing, one guy talk about what he has etc.
One guy talks about taking another mans girl at a hotel or motel so ...
Is it really fair to go at non lyrical tracks when they were doing the same thing back then but the sound just evolved & the non lyrical now doesn’t make sense either? (Some) (some style have Atleast topics)
I like both styles but I think both styles should be appreciated and show what kind vibe I get from the song and does it resonate with you? Do you like it?
Maybe it’s all about having fun, maybe certain topics can be more serious
But what proves that one is better than the other

There is no "one is better than the other" — the two are different concepts that exist simultaneously. Lines can be lyrical regardless of how much wordplay they have. "Rapper's Delight" itself is incredibly lyrical, which is why it's so strange that you use it as an example for your argument.
The topics addressed in a song have nothing to do with their technical or lyrical writing traits. The people who imply stuff like that no idea what they're talking about. It's just something people (mis)use to try and validate their own taste.

I’m basically in agreement with what you’re saying though,
Different concept bring upon different things that you say within a song so you can’t judge on their wordplay or scheme because it can have an hidden agenda or meaning as well.
Rappers Delight is about getting fly, boosting their self esteem up and talking to pretty ladies? Is that not like a lot of thing that are talked about in this generation too?

If you bring up what "Rapper's Delight" is about, then your argument isn't about lyricism vs technical writing — your argument is about casual vs conscious and thematic topics in Rap.
And if that's the case, then why entertain the idea of one being better than the other when they're clearly two separate areas of focus? Why can't Rap as a genre just expand? Why does it HAVE to always be limited to one "real" version that "matters the most"?

I brought that up now cause I realized what their talking about
But u consider Rappers Delight more technical lyrical than a lot of “lyrical” rappers today?
Right now I think flows and melody matter the most
Flow and delivery will always take precedence over lyrics. That’s why mid ass rappers can get away with sounding good
