potentially sets a dangerous precedent. people who are already acting erratically are probably getting taken in anyway

“even if they pose no threat”

    so all should face consequences?

Helps get mentally ill people who pose a threat to others off the streets and into hospice care 👍

    It’s in the title

“even if they pose no threat”

    so all should face consequences?

    It’s legalese

Someone doesn’t need to be involved in an active shooting situation to be considered a potential threat to others

If you’re not from the city don’t comment on this issue

We have shelters, needle programs, access to public healthcare and more.

If someone is homeless and has severe mental illness, being hospitalized and getting meds might be what they need to turn their life around tbh.

Though these programs likely aren’t designed to actually help those people but the idea is nice

    It’s in the title

There’s no way to determine who does and doesn’t pose a threat

What about the mentally ill who are housed? What about mentally ill homeless people whose first act is harmful?

Hospice care doesn’t rehabilitate and reintroduce the mentally ill. They keep them there forever. How do we contend with paying for this?

We solve nothing, just waste more tax dollars and get 2-3 people off the street in exchange for ruining the lives and removing the agency of hundreds of other individuals

as a new york resident i have strong feeling ab this

    1) mentally ill niggas on the subway… the stories are true they are crazy as f*** and i’m ngl i be scared sometimes niggas gonna snap. a year ago, the train i used to take near the neighborhood i was always in, some nigga literally slaughtered motherfuckers on that train. it’s not the 80s like some ppl tryna sensationalize it, but we’re seeing how bad the pandemic affected the most vulnerable

    2) the history of hospitalizing mentally i’ll and neurodivergent people in this capacity in new york is f***ed up. i like really f***ed up. eric adams has proven himself pretty early he’s a “tough on crime when he wants to be” kinda mayor, and i fear that it’s going to be NYPD sending folks to institutions where neither parties are prepared to detain and bouse these folk.

everyone’s unsure how to move forward, but this… hard to say i agree with this but very hard for me to provide other options

my aunt got chased with a knife right outside her building by homeless dude so i get the point of needed to lock crazy people up.

but what’s their definition of mentally ill? someone just having a panic attack?

  • Dec 1, 2022

what i fear is where they are being sent to (paywall behind article), how they are being detained, and WHO is being detained

i have no doubt, the definition will be racialized, unfair, and a fair amount of sane people could be swept up in this, dependin how aggressive he goes. and given the tension in the subway.. could be b aggressive especially on major lines like the 1 and A train

I don’t think somebody having a panic attack would be deemed “severe mental illness” unless they’re also posing a threat to other people

Women in NYC (even the rich ones) be getting roommates bc they're afraid of what these crazies will do to em. Making sure women are safe in the city should be our biggest priority.

  • I completely agree with this. A lot of them don't even realize they need help.
