What is hospitalizing them going to do?

What is keeping them on the streets gonna do is the better question

keep them off the train and out of the station. hospitalizing could at least try to help them to

For what, a couple days? As great as it would be to have unlimited hospital beds and staff, this just isn’t the case. We’re not equipped as a country to just throw people in hospitals for an indeterminant amount of time. Yes, then getting some medical attention would be good, but it would be just as good to get these people outpatient medical care and outpatient resources.

    ^see my above post

I agree that they need shelter, but hospitals aren’t the answer. We need a system similar to Finland in order to get them stable housing

Ok, but clearly they can’t just up and provide and build shelter for all of them asap so this is the best option for the immediate future

What do you mean by immediate future? Again, we can’t just stick all these people into hospitals indefinitely. Hospitals are meant for acute issues, they’re not equipped to hold all these people for weeks to months without an end in site. We have limited availability as is for people with actual acute issues, we just don’t have the resources to spend on all these people.

And I’m not saying it wouldn’t be nice to be able to give these people stable housing like this, it’s just the reality that we physically cannot

Immediate future as in right now as is starting today. Idk what fairytale land you live in, but you can’t just up and build s*** in a day, it takes time.

If you don’t prefer them being put in hospitals to get help then you’re basically saying you’d rather them on the street right now.

it is literally cheaper to house the homeless rather than keep them on the streets tho just making sure y'all are aware of that

    news.unm.edu/news/unm-study-reveals-cost-benefits-in-housing-the-homeless

"Homeless people tend to be high users of community services, such as emergency rooms and inpatient and outpatient treatment services. Within communities, criminal justice systems are also impacted by homelessness. Housing the homeless reduces the burden on the jail. Many homeless who are picked up are arrested for minor violations, such as shoplifting, public urination, disorderly conduct or d***/alcohol use, Guerin said “this is not cost effective. People who should be in jail are those we are afraid of – kidnappers, murderers, robbers and d*** traffickers. We should put people in jail that we’re afraid of, not those we are angry at,” he said.

They also use more acute care for preventable conditions made worse by homelessness.

The results of the study demonstrate that one-year after being housed, study group member costs were $615,920.49 or 31.6 percent less than costs incurred the previous year they were not in the program. This amounted to an average savings of $12,831.68 per homeless individual in the study."

No offense, but you just don’t see the reality of things. I know most people don’t get to see what hospitals are like on the inside from an administrative and patient load perspective, but we physically do not have the space nor staff to accommodate all these people.

Like you’re literally proving my point by saying we can’t build shelters in a day. There’s a reason we discharge people from the hospital, it’s because we need to be able to accommodate other people who have acute inpatient needs.

I get that you want to help these people, and I do too. But I don’t know how many times I need to say that hospitals CAN NOT accommodate them. I’m not saying they don’t want to, I’m saying they physically cannot

My feelings about this are completely reliant on the condition of care they'll be receiving.

This could be a beautiful step forward in our society, to treat and rehabilitate in an environment thats safe and tailor made for the unique needs of the mentally ill.

Or it could be a means of further oppressing the disadvantaged, and tucking them away in a corner somewhere so those who turn up their noses at them don't have to be bothered by their presence.

Hospitals where I live rn are f***ing packed. Doctors treating patients in the waiting room. 72+ hours to get a room. Lines out the urgent care and emergency room.

People got no clue just how thin of a thread our healthcare system is hanging on by stg

You don’t understand it’s not a point of trying to accommodate ALL of them. No s*** hospitals can’t accommodate all of them. The point is they want to use hospitals to try to accommodate as many as they can which is better than not trying at all and leaving them all on the streets

You don’t have to be from NYC to understand that permanently filling up hospitals is stupid policy that won’t actually help anyone in the long run other than rich yuppies who hate seeing poor people

You ignore the dangers the mentally ill inflict on people. My neighborhood had a paramedic fatally stabbed on her lunch break and I don't even live on the island

I’m literally saying that this is not something that will sustainably solve any of the consequences of rampant homelessness or any of its root causes people just think that this will magically solve these peoples homelessness or their mental illness

It won’t! These people will come back to the street regardless, except they now fill hospital beds that might actually be used. There needs to be a fundamentally different approach
