I got the impression his death was sudden and that they didn’t record anything and now they had to rethink the whole show

They could have just incorporated Granddad dying and having them moving back to Chicago.

Would make for a better setting with current issues going on and gives us a new set of characters. I'd miss Tom and Uncle Ruckus if they did that but I'm sure they could have cameos or w.e.

Witherspoon's son JD said he auditioned to play his pops, but they just strung him along because they already had somebody in place to replace Witherspoon already. He did a whole video on how he thought the situation was f***ed up, but that's Hollywood for you.
