who said they were disavowed? it’s just unrealistic to expect someone to listen to music from so far back in a genre that’s gone through as many stylistic changes as rap

All imma say is, you steady running your mouth about an album that's extremely important to the genre, and claiming that you never even listened to the album or artist is wack as s***.

    Just sit this one out.

How come rap is the only genre where the newer fans disavow older classic influential acts.

Pop fans don't swear off madonna or MJ

Rock fans dont swear off van halen or pink floyd

Metal fans don't swear off black sabbath

    Smh

It's possible to like Thug, Lil Baby, Future, Kodak, Polo G, etc.

    &

Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Run-DMC, LL

Cacs start listening to hip-hop in the 2010s and have the audacity to speak on the genre and its pioneers without even having knowledge on them. Even going so far as to mock them.

Watch them have a fit whenever someone speaks bad on The Beatles though.

i mean there has been some fans from those genres who do disavow those older acts but not as much as hip hop. it’s cos hip hop is a young man’s game and also it evolves all the time so expecting someone to like some s*** from 30 years ago is hard when hip hop changes so much each decade that people will find rap way before their time kinda obsolete. hip hop is a very ageist genre too u get constant jokes online rn about how rappers should be jazz artists if they’re 40 etc.

808s did more than that and u know it a lot of modern r&b and pop is inspired by it directly or indirectly and is the reason why mainstream music is a lot more moodier than before. i still think paid in full more influential but respect 808s

It's really corny as hell you got people who are damn near proud to proclaim they've never listened to a prolific artist who was important to the growth of the genre. Swear it's bozos like that who got the most to say about the genre and they have very little knowledge and insight on as they probably only recently got into it.

You never listened to that artist who's an important figure in the genre you claim to be a fan of? You should probably get on that, because it's pretty damn sad. Especially when that artist influenced your favorites.

paid in full is one of the most foundational albums to the genre

eric b and rakim influenced kanye west and pretty much damn near every artist that came after them in the 90s

  • Jan 31, 2021

    This is actually pretty tough

Paid in full started the shift from the simplistic rhymes to an increase focus on lyricism in rap

While 808s started the shift from gangster rap to more moody feeling based rap with an addition of singing and autotune

    808s duh wtf

Rakim don't meant have one song as powerful as " Coldest Winter"

Genuinely curious question, is there a certain year of rap that’s like the cut off point for you to listen to?

nope. i just like listening to stuff that sounds good to my ears (which is mostly s*** pre-2010)
