I was listening to the album a few weeks ago and there were still glaring holes (that smi verse on Eternal still has me like ) that make me think back to why I didnt like this album as a whole
But then, songs like Do You Remember, We Go High, 5 Year Plan, Town Of The Hill, Handsome, and Slide Around are still on that album too.
But that’s 6 songs of a 23 song album.
Do you still feel the same about the album or has your opinion changed?
And a comment I heard on a podcast years ago about this reception saying “I don’t like my music with this much positivity” and thinking of @YoungNastyShawty Noname interview of how in black art we love our s*** dark and traumatic, makes me wonder is there such thing as a positive album that can be well received in these current times?
On that note: post any favorite albums current or past that you feel are pretty positive!
feel like lil yachty has done positive music that wasn’t corny, i never listened to this album
The album wasn't panned because it was too positive
It's in the execution
This.
It was trash and killed my Chance fandom.
Coloring Book was super positive and Christian and never received that reception for a reason.

Not by critics but the internet made those comments.
Im well aware the songwriting and lyricism took a STEEP decline on it.
That dont take away from my question tho
These days yeah probably. I feel like back in the day positive music was received better. Be by Common comes to mind
The album is so bad that even positive reviews from allmusic, pitchfork etc. couldn’t save it. It’s the worst mainstream album of all time!

Arrested Development’s another one
There are so many dope positive albums, I mean I guess u could nitpick and find negative elements of them but still I think positive doesnt always have to be in your face telling u its positive and can still address negative realities

Chance has made dope positive projects himself even, The Big Day was just ass

Think thats part of why We Go High consistently is most people’s favs off the album cause he actually talks about the bad times in his relationship?

Yeah you're right. The overall vibe of Acid Rap was positive. So was Coloring Book

Ehhhh I definitely would not call Acid Rap a positive album

I dont think so, its just one of the better sounding songs
Like I do think there is a genuine point to be made about us liking negativity but The Big Day just sucks and isnt an example of that
Yeah you're right. The overall vibe of Acid Rap was positive. So was Coloring Book
Not really acid rap. Especially considering the context of the project is him being addicted.
Coloring book tho forsure

I would. What about it is negative besides acid rain?
Ehhhh I definitely would not call Acid Rap a positive album
Why? Whats negative about it?

Bro there’s a HUGE difference in quality with Be and The Big Day
There's a way to make a positive album but a lot of artists feel like they gotta make the happiest sounding s*** and it ends up sounding like some corny indie movie soundtrack s***. Feels so forced and manufactured.
Why? Whats negative about it?
Acid Rain is right there.
I think Coloring Book had more happy themes

^ thx!
oh my goodness, of course there are an abundance of albums that have primarily "positive" content, is that really a question
there is an intersting discussion to be had about whether the artists themselves tap into pain and hurt more than positive emotions and how it affects their art. we do hear from artists on that sometimes but i'd love to hear more. the "they just got heartbroken their next album will be a classic" thing we do (i do it too) is pretty much a meme to me at this point.

Addicted to what? Acid?
The only song that really focuses in on themes of addiction is Lost and that doesn’t make it negative it’s just self reflection and also that song doesnt even seem to be entirely from his perspective
