There's a way to make a positive album but a lot of artists feel like they gotta make the happiest sounding s*** and it ends up sounding like some corny indie movie soundtrack s***. Feels so forced and manufactured.
The thing with Chance is that for some reason he never stopped promoting Chance 3 and refused to switch things up. It would have been great to make an album about his new marriage but bro really included the most goofy ass songs to accompany it.
Bro there’s a HUGE difference in quality with Be and The Big Day
There is but I was focusing on positive music as a whole

yeah, there's more to be investigated here tho we need a doc
@provider i think in the current era we’re in I think it’s a valid question to ask on whether we (as an audience) are more fixated on dark and negative themes these days
Honestly there’s a few songs that are on there that are enjoyable but I think it’s more about how Chance absolutely tanked his momentum coming off of Coloring Book with dropping TBD. I’d like to see Chance get another shot but honestly it’s a little annoying he’s waited this long to follow up with another LP and he’s probably lost any footing that he had as a potential star in the hip hop field unless he drops something incredible
This.
It was trash and killed my Chance fandom.
Coloring Book was super positive and Christian and never received that reception for a reason.
Positive doesn’t have to mean just only talking about fun things
Talking about experiences in a reflective way without pushing out any negative views is positive imo, I think just trying to act like s***drugs and vices in general dont exist in the music isnt even real
You can acknowledge these things and still be positive

Touché lemme edit op rq

I don’t think it’s the positivity of the music that was manly criticized, it was the approach that was. It seemed like he was trying mad hard to get viral hit songs on some pre tiktok s*** and everything we loved about him was thrown out of the window
First thought when you asked that was Stevie, he was pretty positive. As for music today I'm not sure.
Rap is positive in the context of the American dream. Accumulating material, concentrating wealth. Violent opposition to all who oppose.
The cowboy is an outlaw. Even the rogue cop is an outlaw. He's not a boy scout. He's not a brick in a wall. Perfectly individualized. Success by any means. The anti-hero.
If you mean rainbows and butterflies- rap is about being cool. It's hard to make that cool.
The album is so bad that even positive reviews from allmusic, pitchfork etc. couldn’t save it. It’s the worst mainstream album of all time!
Revival out now
I think people like Drake, Kendrick, and Cole made it look so easy to remain relevant while dropping enjoyable albums that we forget how hard it is to do both for the rest of the field

Bro. I'm saying that I'm not speaking about The Big Day lmao. I'm talking about positive music AS A WHOLE today compared to decades ago. It has nothing to do with chance and the big day.

what do you mean by current era exactly
and yeah my reply was mostly to the "is there such thing as a good positive album" i think that is a very silly question lol but sure looking at the relation in how audiences gravitate to "negative" or "positive" music is valid
i'm also using quotation marks cause like @Mitchell i don't think positive and negative is so clear cut.

Yeah edited op that was a pretty loaded question niggas been in a pensive mood all day
Addicted to what? Acid?
The only song that really focuses in on themes of addiction is Lost and that doesn’t make it negative it’s just self reflection and also that song doesnt even seem to be entirely from his perspective
Yeah he said he was doing a lot d**** making it and got so addicted during surf session he could barely contribute to the project. I'll say smoke again and chain smoking lowkey has those themes too, but not in like an overt way.
Acid rap to me is more like a d***gy high than an actual overall positive project like coloring book is. Acid rap very melancholic to me.
Aside from lost u still have paranoia, acid rain as well

I feel like there was a good amount of positive music (at least rap) in 2016 that was charting really well so I disagree. Though I do think certain subsections (i.e. music fans on online forums) that prefer darker subject matter

Like today lol. There’s been threads made about how a lot of the content that is popular being more angry or combative than positive like the ispys of the 2010s

I don’t agree with your definition of positive tbh
I wouldn’t say Smoke Again is about addiction but I did forget about chain smoker
But even with that I dont think that takes away from it being positive, I really hate the definition of positive just being talking about only fun and nice things thats just fake s*** to me
Chain Smoker, Acid Rain, Paranoia is all real introspective and reflective songs that hit hard for people who can relate to themes of them. Songs like that help people deal with real s*** and he isnt putting any messages that put you in a negative mindset, instead he was giving examples on how to reflect and acknowledge these real things that people go through
Thats REAL positivity, music that affects you in a positive way and helps you think or deal with the world
Music thats just like “ISNT THE WORLD SO GREAT EVERYTHING IS AMAZING” always comes off more tone deaf than positive
