Childish Gambino's "Because The Internet"
Accompanied by a 72 page screenplay, Gambino literally crafted an entire universe for the main character of the album, simply named "The Boy". Gambino often wore the same outfit in TV press interviews and late night talk show events to further bring the character to life. The album was also supported by 2 shorts, the major release being "Clapping For The Wrong Reasons"
Why is this a cult classic?
BTI received quite average reviews across many publications. However it is considered a full package and masterful experience by many fans and listeners who commend the multi-dimensional avenues Gambino chose to explore.
There's been 2 other major releases with an underlining theme and further production on a large scale. Those being Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" and Frank Ocean's "Endless". Both of contained high end production design.
What about the music?
BTI explores various genres and sounds from the gorgeous and trippy "Flight of the Navigator", lead single "3005" to one of the best records of his career, "Telegraph Ave".
"I had a dream
I had a dream I was flying over all of us
There were so many pretty people, so many pretty faces
I talked to some birds, I fell in love again
And none of this ever ended
Everything just kept going, and going, and going
And even when you laughed, you cried
And even when you were sad, you were really happy
Cause you were here, and I got to meet every star
Every planet, everything that made me
And we all kissed, and became the same
We became the same, we became the same."
Gambino also provides some classic hip hop with a cinematic twist in "Crawl"
What are some good cuts?
We still haven't discussed:
Conclusion:
We just don't see albums like these anymore. The story, universe, characters, visuals all tie in together. We have been brainwashed with basic rollouts, 1 video here, track list there, available now! It's cookie cutter. It's old.
The sonics are a wave of lush summers, vibes in the middle of July where you're falling love. This album needs to be cherished for it's experience, I honestly think it's made to be heard on the island of Kauai as the sun goes down.
3.15.20 is more ambitious more interesting and honestly despite its flaws far better in every way possible
ive never had an album experience "enhanced" by visuals, universe or whatever the f*** op is talking about i just want the album to be good, and i dont think thats particularly the case with this one

ok boomer
I don't even like it but it really is Die Lit. It was just too good and did so much for Carti. The critics didn't d*** ride it but if you were outside it was the people's album

Yeah I never understood all the extra stuff artists try to do the most with. No one in the future is going to take that into account just put all that energy into the music and make it good
It’s definitely up there op. Solid project that was overlooked but honestly tracks like Telegraph Ave are burned in my memories, graduating high school and driving around the summer makes me so nostalgic.
In Oakland, in Oakland..
i really enjoyed this album growing up but idk i only ever return to flight of navigator

Because those who do are “artists” and not strictly rappers. Visuals are a very important part of the story and anyone who takes their music seriously will tell you that.
masterpiece
nah life the biggest troll is insane
urn crazy too
i feel like imma cringe at sweatpants and s*** like that but idk i might give this whole thing a spin rn

i mean i do understand why they do it but that doesnt influence my opinion on the music at all. MBDTF era visuals are amazing and grandiose and everything but i would still love the album without them. i do appreciate them but yea
nfs this album and yeezus dropping around the same time changed the way i listen to music and opened my eyes to appreciating promo and rollouts
you know i didnt like it when it came out but i gave it another chance the other day and it seems like i got it wrong the first time
people hating on childish Gambino showing more commitment to existing in the vein of sly stone. such a challenging record and I think the universal motif of world peace throughout the album is convincing and appropriate given when he dropped it. People don't realize how hard it is to sell a listener on hearing and submitting to "there is love in every moment under the sun". This man made a devastating song about global warming sound so convincingly serene and happy. And a lo-fi jai Paul assisted album dropped on the heels of one of the biggest songs of the decade. People just hate this s*** cuz of the song titles I swear

it has a lot of interesting ideas its just hard to get through and not easy on the ears
