So basically I've had tinnitus for my entire life and my ears been ringing mainly because during my childhood I developed an underbite so my Tempomandibular Joint is a little tilted which causes tinnitus
To reverse that tilting I gotta go through a big big surgery which I have no intention of going through since that underbite really ain't doing anything to me it's kinda unique too. THE ONLY ISSUE IS TINNITUS and I'm not entirely sure if the surgery fixes tinnitus too or just the underbite that causes it, I may still keep the tinnitus due to my earphone habits or smth

With my love for music and continuous listening of course my tinnitus developed not to mention that I am forced to use earphones to listen to recorded lectures every day of the week because my uni professors use some trash mics to record and the volume is always too low on the speaker

Lately tho, tinnitus really been ruining my nights, whenever I'm too tired or exhausted I hear that s*** loud and clear, sometimes when it's a long day at uni and I'm hanging out post lectures I can't hear people clearly because of the sound. I lay in bed at night trying to sleep then I get lost in the noise, and eventually I sleep but I'm pretty sure it contributes to why I been sleeping late this past year or two. A month ago I also got sick with what I assumed was COVID (I stayed at home for 2 weeks without testing to confirm tho) and ever since that sickness my ears have been going crazy. Sometimes I get distracted by my tinnitus and when I'm tired it really weighs on me at night. What can I do to help? Everything I been reading online seems like a scam. I assumed posting this on a music forum could show me some peeps who suffer the same. Any tips or recommendations are appreciated.

But between that joint and the potential surgery and your condition worsening since whatever the recent illness was please please please seek actual medical help specifically ear specialists (not sure what the name for this kind of doctor is)

I really don't want that surgery because despite being low-risk it is very obstructive and it takes 6-12 weeks to recover which is a hefty amount of time I be doing s*** all the time.
Not to mention that it will change my life, for better or for worse, and I don't know if I can accept that. It will definitely change a small but noticeable part of my appearance and I'm not sure I can take that. It was recommended to me as a child and it was much more convenient but my parents refused due to how obstructive it is and now as an adult I don't think I want it either.

I think you should still seek out professional medical advice regarding the surgery so at the very least you can have more knowledge about whether it would even help or not

Because if the surgery can significantly improve your tinnitus that's knowledge you really want in your back pocket because as much of an impediment that the surgery might be (and I'm not trying to downplay that at all) the way you described your tinnitus makes it sound like eventually it'll will be even more limiting and obstructing than the post surgery wait time and the small change in your appearance

So you should be well versed in any and all potential options

I can be of no help. My tinnitus is because of noise exposure, OP's is because of TMJ disorder. OP says he doesn't know if fixing it will stop the tinnitus. In that case, you probably want to consult a professional, not KTT2. OP says he doesn't wanna have surgery because he'll have to take it easy for 6-12 weeks and is afraid of his appearance being altered. I don't know how obstructive it is besides that. So if he's not willing to have the surgery, there's nothing else that's gonna help. Tinnitus won't magically stop one day.

be forced to relax for a couple months and then live in peace or endure a lifetime of agony hmmm

if the surgery can fix it, it's a no brainer imo

yeah even just relatively loud music from speakers or earbuds over time can cause you to develop it. there's obviously levels to it but everyone i talk to says it's hellish no matter how faint the ringing cuz it's always there and will only slowly get worse over time

  • May 7, 2023

For example. For me, it was mainly a lot of concerts/festivals/parties without protection. I think I read like 15%-20% adults have it?

    I have it.

    And yes.

It would be impossible to sleep if I did not have background noise to drown out the tinnitus

Have a fan or something running while you sleep for a soft background noise.

It will help in taking you off focusing on the tinnitus while you try to sleep.

I can not sleep without a fan at all. Even in Winter, I'll just have it pointing another way if its too cold but I need the noise to sleep. It helps immensely.

My tinnitus is my party trick. I hear angels singing and if you put your ear up to mine then you can hear them singing too.

Coupled with pulsating at random times it can be distracting.

But after the surgery probably comes braces, and this s*** could take up to years to get completed and I’m in my early 20s so it’s kinda crucial I don’t wanna be a 21 year old dude with some brand new braces on

I was moreso asking for relief techniques/coping mechanisms or ways to slow down its progression rather than total riddance since I knew that was not really attainable in my case

Do the voices in your head be pulling hoes?

Once they hear it they giggle and freak out, so yeah.

Used to legit think it was an angel when I was little, but actually it’s just an extremely rare form of it. It’s uncanny though. Sounds like an angel doing opera

Relief: I believe there's some weird s*** u can do that gives u silence for 2 minutes, I think it might've been posted in my thread
Slow progression: stop prolonged exposure of high volume levels if your tinnitus is not just a TMJ issue
