“A lack of respect for the older generations”

can’t think of a project from either of them that doesn’t have a ton of homage to rap from previous eras

i think both of them can fundamentally rap though. there’s old freestyles and stuff that fits within the parameters the fundamentals, especially with travis

there are a ton of rappers that don’t have real respect for the history or don’t exemplify any of the values or fundamentals of hip hop for sure. these two are just not the guys to make that argument with

Carti stands out because hes the originator not because he does anything especially better than anyone making that music lol

Valid thread but you chose two artists that definitely do care and are influenced by past acts... Pretty sure Travis talks a lot of about Houston rappers that have influenced him while Carti has given props to Curren$y, Nas, MF DOOM, etc before.

Travis knows how to fundamentally rap, he’s just not overall great at the skill of rapping (specifically lyricism)

You can argue the same for Carti

hate how their fans hate anything outside of travis/carti its annoying as f***. Weeknd song case in point

I would consider both Travis and Carti to be students of the game. Especially Carti. They are just working with the sounds and styles of their time. If they were born 10-15 years earlier they would be more traditional lyricists/rappers

  • Oct 2, 2024

I mean it’s pre hard to make songs sound good without lyricism don’t you think

Travis during Rodeo and pre-Rodeo was more focused on bars. I have no idea why people forget this (I'm not even a big Travis fan personally but I can't hate on his rebrand).

You’re right. Like even before Owl Pharaoh days his rapping style was more lyrics focused than it is now. His writing style now is way different

Yeah it's honestly just kind of pathetic that he went from making songs like "The Prayer" to dropping COFFEE BEAN.

Travis Scott and Carti are the most hip hop artist on a mainstream level for this new generation

  • Oct 2, 2024

I hate generalizing/conflating but it’s kinda funny to see some of this forum always so desperate to make everyone aware of the “influence” of Carti’s generation of rappers while lamenting the state that hip hop is in because of that influence. I say this all time though (not directed at you op)

No it doesnt just change over time niggas tried to be rebellious and standoffish to make up for a lack of skill and that has seeped into the 2 generations that have come since the 2016 class lol

And its starting to piss me off niggas is coming to this “thats just the way it is” stance like we aint just watch them do that.

Carti and uzi and etc came with all that “music a vibe” bullshit to mask a lack of dedicated effort and skill and now we just acting like we mysteriously got here. Niggas is stupid fr lol

All i was getting at is that travis and carti seems like a random 2 to place full blame on for all of this and whether we like it or not that’s how things are now jackass

The content was always the same. He never really had much substance but his cadences and flows and s*** like that were more in line with the tradition. A song like Hyaena is a good example of what I mean. That song was like him going back to his roots

Cyhi did a reference of a late draft. Both him and the producer corrected leakers
