No but people use sales as a qualifying factor for defending an album as good or a classic. That’s when someone will say sales don’t matter. But they don’t think sales literally don’t matter. They understand the concept of a business.
People only talk about sales and an album being good when they refer to how people feel in general.
Sales and classic status matter to a degree. If no1 heard it, its not a classic

People on here will use any argument they can to prop up or s*** on an artist, sales included.
I agree with you to a degree on sales being a qualifier for classics. Illmatic is a common example of a classic that didn’t sell well. But Blazing Arrow by Blackalicious is one of my favorite albums ever, but I won’t call it a classic because no one knows the s***.
higher numbers gives artists an argument for larger budgets for albums tho
it’s not direct correlation

Wrong. Joy division - Unknown pleasures
Knowing a song went platinum or did 100 million streams doesn't make me enjoy a song more or less. If some people rock like that, it's weird and I don't get it
Besides how important it is for the artists and labels, from a fan standpoint sales only matter in a GOAT discussion when using evidence to show why one artist touched the people in a big way, but besides that - no they don't matter to how much I like the music
Sometimes it's fun to look at sales tho just to look at size in numbers

Not talking about anything besides hip hop.
they don't matter to quality but people like to see their favourites be successful
Music is a form of artistic expression and people perceive art differently and consume it differently. If the artist fulfills their expression through their music then that's all that matters
Whose OP?
Not talking about anything besides hip hop.
a classic is whatever a person deems it to be lol, its all subjective at the end of the day

my sentiments exactly. It's nice to see your fave hit top 10 or #1. That doesn't make them a better musician, just more successful than others. Plus every artist doesn't want that type fame that comes with it too

Classic is confusing to me. There are some albums and hits where everyone can go "That's a classic". But for others it's debatable. For most artists, they just don't have on in their discography, but someone could actually argue that they have one.
I miss when KTT didn’t care about sales Grr Drake stans!!
LOL I like Drake but his stans really do feel like numbers and charts = quality. Toosie Slide debunks that whole myth right there
Illmatic, Madvillainy
"Sales and classic status matter to a degree. "
"To a degree"
And illmatic was also bootlegged plus it was a street rap album at a time when hiphop wasnt that popular. It still did well and the talk behind it was bigger than the sales which is why nas could push 200k fw with iww. Not really the most solid example you could give as an outlier here.
Madvillainy isnt a classic
