they only don't matter for ktt users when it goes against their agenda

when drake scores 9 #1 albums in a row sales dont matter but when he loses #1 to a country artist they do matter

There are positives and negatives to being a popular artist in terms of how your sales affect your artistic out put

    Positives -
    Higher budget
Less emphasis on profit since you don’t need to make money

    Negatives
Corporate agenda to continue profiting regardless of output
A subsequent watering down of sound as a consequence

And illmatic was also bootlegged plus it was a street rap album at a time when hiphop wasnt that popular. It still did well and the talk behind it was bigger than the sales which is why nas could push 200k fw with iww. Not really the most solid example you could give as an outlier here.

    Madvillainy isnt a classic

Still wasn’t a big seller. No matter how you wanna rationalize it

Madvillainy is definitely a classic and I don’t even like doom

Classic is confusing to me. There are some albums and hits where everyone can go "That's a classic". But for others it's debatable. For most artists, they just don't have on in their discography, but someone could actually argue that they have one.

judging whats a classic or just music in general will always be confusing because it's subjective and people sometimes try way too hard to force their opinions of it on others.

Well as rap gets bigger if you arent selling well thats kinda a problem. When rap was underground a rapper going gold or even cracking the billboard charts was impressive.

Same dudes that try to make the rings dont matter cuz “Robert horry has 7” argument

Have no sense of what longevity and consistency at the top means

Unable to use their mentals correctly

Only drake stans care about countering this argument so passionately ive noticed

Kinda shows that y’all know he don’t have any real classics and sales is all he has lol

true. I just feel like for a classic album, my personal requirement is that it had to have critical acclaim, at the very least decent sales, and influence on the Music industry or music itself. Some albums are classics that influence the whole industry. Some classic albums only influence that genre. They also have to be albums that are generally regarded as strong albums not only by critics but by the GP and people outside of the fanbase too

But there are rock albums released when it was the most popular genre that didn’t sell well and are still classics

Why wouldn’t that same logic apply to hip hop

It came from when a popular artists was expected by fans to sell X but only sold Y. The fans had to justify Y and thus created the common phrase “sales don’t matter”

Hip hop has always tried to distinguish itself from other genres which is why we talk about some things other genres would never care about

Example: the streets matter in rap but dont in rock

higher budgets don't mean s*** when an artist with a drum machine from the 80s and a half-working synth can make better music than your average rapper

thats another thing, differentiating criteria for classics.

to me, i just judge a classic simply off how much i enjoy the album, how it made me feel, and what it means to me. i don't take into account sales or its affect on the industry

People only care about sales, awards and review scores when it can be used to hype their faves or clown artists they don’t like
