This is not a MONOCULTURE thread (that conversation is so f***ing tiring at this point). This is more so about the industry itself...from the recent Diddy SA suits, to the lack of gatekeepers, to the ever-growing amount of celebrities who have Peter Pan syndrome. How can the next generation of rappers flourish and experience some form of longevity when the industry seems to be in shambles rn?

Are you talking in terms of music quality or the industry in itself?

    the industry

any type of genre in the limelight has its' peaks and valleys quality wise, but i feel like we're in some sort of transitional phase when it comes to the industry itself.

it goes underground because the mainstream sound is stuck and the mainstream audience mostly doesnt care anymore including labels saying they dont care much and the huge drop of 40% as an industry

    Do whatever Drake does

drake is drake and way more established froma previous era lol and even then his fw numbers (even tho still amazing) were less

which just shows the overall downward trajectory as an entire industry

the genre is literally mostly alive by drake, future, kendrick, travis scott, gunna and lil durk in terms of actual album streams not just hits - which are artists from 10 years ago - and most of them did worst with their latest compared to the one before which again shows the overall downward trajectory

for the most part there are no newer artists (2018/2019 to now) doing great with album streams only singles

    You forgot Lil Baby.

Despite how much KTT clowns him, My Turn and It's Only Me are still doing very well on the charts.

I think we'll keep on cycling through new rappers that get hot super fast and hyped up to be the next thing until one or more of them actually have the skills to be a rap superstar.

also other genres are making great strides in the mainstream

pop is making a comeback, various electronic genres are getting extremely popular & dance music in many forms is the "it" thing rn with reggaeton, house, drumNbass, garage, afrobeat & edm

rap will probably not be the dominating genre in the next few years if it doesnt get it together. and might even end up worst than that. its everywhere irl and especially online on socials.

because once younger people latch onto pop or one of the dance genre(s) more and more then thats gonna be "the music of the youth" for them - literally like what rap did to rock

Kanye got a ton of sons but none even close to his level of cultural (in hip hop/ the community at large) significance. Kanye was changing waves every album at one point. Idk any one active who got it like that rn

there needs to be that one album or two that just pops off...even though we're in the fast food era, i still believe that the album format is the most important metric to measure an artist's legacy

Tbf that’s a result of fast food culture. People don’t wanna be clowned or lose relevance for trying something new
