I don't get the point of this thread. "The industry" is making more money than ever in this history of mankind. You think a few scandals is going to slow that down?

Nah he's very diff kind of artist than Jazz Cartier

Lyrics definitely not his main focus, he's more interested in melodies for the most part and his singing voice gets some getting used to.

    Got some great songs tho

Cartier in Da House - House
Once In a Blue Moonn - Drum and Bass
    Vapor Drip - vaporwave
    Gold Fangz - new romantic/post-punk(?)

This guy did a good primer video on him

label heads are already shifting their focus away from hip-hop. sure internationally it is still the #1 genre but realistically when it comes to making waves, American culture is absolutely crucial to the process. things are more fractured than ever rn so it is really hard to pinpoint where things will go.

i don't think the scandals are taking away money from the industry; what i'm getting at is different...i think some people have abused their power way too much and there is some coverups the innerworkings needs to be retooled

they’re the consumers, so they do play a role

Nah, consumerism is reactive and cultivated. Mainstream don't matter when we less than 15%

  • Sir Swagalot

that jazz comment got me thinking fr…its’ fluidity and improvisational style is the exact opposite to a structured DAW would be interesting to see if people start to take notice and embrace that approach more

I do feel like live instrumentation is lowkey having a moment in certain circles, would be cool if that filters up to the mainstream

I think the double attack of social media + streaming is what has killed music in general and rap in particular. The incentive structure is broken. Algorithms are prioritized over the art. I don’t see how it recovers. It’ll just continue to be mediocre s***, but LOTS of it.

You're right in that streaming has definitely put less priority on working on an album as a body of art. I think digitization has done that to a lot of media forms.

Ah I didn't see you said mainstream in the title

In that case the next big hip-hop artist won't be a pure hip-hop artist most likely.
There'll always be an audience for that so the genre won't die, but mainstream wise I think you're gonna see less and less cut through and reach Drake, Kendrick, Cole heights.

A big factor in Drake's longevity and popularity is his versatility.
Best I Ever Had was essentially a pop-R&B-rap hybrid and that combo with additions every year is what kept him hot.

Someone who can mix seamlessly hip-hop with R&B, DnB/House/Garage, or Indie, or electroclash, or funk carioca or whatever other genre that's currently doing well is probably going to be the next superstar you all are looking for.

Like, now Jazz is very popular with the mid-20s crowd, so as much as it's being clowned, that Andre album was actually a very smart move.

If Cartier God was more accessible to mainstream audiences and a more traditional rapper, he'd be someone to look at

Country rap fusion, Lil Nas X was just ahead of the game...

It’s something I’ve thought about. But considering how dance music is taking over, it looks like music is going more in the sequenced direction and not away from it. Music without a steady repeating beat is just too alien now to most people as far as mainstream. If I had to guess, I don’t think any fluid or improv musical style will ever have a significant audience

Most of those 20s jazz fans just like Mario kart music low key. It’s a niche crowd but even within that niche, most of them don’t actually listen to jazz as much as they just like certain elements, such as the chords

    Mario kart music

I'd take the "we are deprioritizing hip hop artist" thing with a grain of salt

Like getting super in to music and really diving into s*** like lyrics, imagery, meaning, technical aspects of the production, etc is seen as some nerd s*** now and it’s cool to turn your nose up at that type of s*** in favor of some rage/trap s***. It’s in a similar vein to how niggas act like Pac was overrated.

Like if you make a thread on a meaning for a song and it’s not same face value s*** 100% you’re gonna get some “nigga needa take his meds” type s***. Like it’s cool to be ironically stupid

If someone says PAC is overrated then they're either naive or trolling

    Pls no

But it's crazy how numbers and narrative obsessed rap fans are now in comparison to a decade ago.

It's lowkey the main reason why so many mainstream rap albums are bloated and functioning more like playlists than cohesive albums.

That's why I can never hop on the Tyler and Kendrick hate trains on here. They're some of the few niggas in the mainstream that are still attempting to put out cohesive albums with a concept.

Im gonna say a controversial statement, but I think it’s going to go more in the way of indépendant releases and NFTS ans stuff of that nature.

this is all pretty close to an infancy stage right now. it will take some years but eventually people will get sick of it after its been monetized and used up and itll go backwards. The gaming industry is further ahead in this aspect, and gamers are finally sick of it all and forcing devs and large companies to conform back to how it was because people simply wont pay for dogshit at a certain point.

What that looks like for music we will have to see. Once you get old enough nothing is surprising and you learn to filter the bullshit out because true art and things worth your time will still shine through anyway. Off years or particularly slow years like this one for music just makes it seem a lot worse than it really is. There were still some good-great musical releases though even during a year like this. Gaming in contrast, had a great year with a ton of great titles that dropped, though i would say the year before or so was slow and had not much of anything and felt like games were dead.
