I mean I don't think that's the primary factor of how he switched it up tbh. It's more of cause he started out hanging with Slums guys most notably Mike who greatly influenced his sound
What do you feel is the primary factor if not exactly that in a distilled fashion?
He literally named his debut Doris, she died, s*** changed
His friend died and he literally made a song an hour later while peaking on L about it, on the next album release
Edit not about Doris name more about meaning of the album I won't remove what I said
I just don’t see the switch in op
DNA was an outlier on IDLS, posting that and acting like the whole album had that energy just seems wrong
And 45 is not very different from the current Alc collabs

Subject matter, sure, yeah, but if we're talking about flow-wise, production-wise and overall sound it's clear that the Slums movement was the ultimate factor of him radically changing his sound.

I hope you’re not serious. I was going to roast you for this but I realize there is a huge community on Reddit that believes this dumb s***
Doris was a name Earl thought sounded cool, it was not his grandmothers name
But the lyrics
Yea ig it's my fault for downplaying it because generally he does seem extremely worn down on songs like Peanut, but I believe what I said is the answer. Not like it wasn't a range of things anyway

Jesus it's not about the actual name

But you said it was tho. If you didn’t make that point I wouldn’t have had to say that. Seems youre deflecting from being blatantly wrong

You gotta be joking he had been very clear what the album meant
I'm not arguing semantics this ain't reddit
Edit f*** I said literally aight you win technically. I didn't set that up well lmfao. Pay attention to the rest of that tho that's more of importance

Doris? Listen again lol
It’s not exactly a focused record about loss. It’s more a representation of him coming back from his trip into the whirlwind of what was going on and touching on all his musical aspirations
Burgundy and maybe the last two records are the only ones that even remotely touch on the loss as far as I remember, and it really wasn’t the main theme
You’re the one seeming like a Reddit user to misinterpret a hip hop artist this badly
Edit I see you edit it’s all good

Reddit is infamous for spreading lies and rumours and it becoming canon about people. A lot of people for example still think KG told Tim Duncan happy mother's day after his mom died as if he's on some psychopath s***
That’s different s*** lol he was probably on some other s*** or drunk at the shows
He said it’s not a choice. You telling me you know better than Earl on his own music?
It’s a stylistic choice man idk what’s hard to understand about it

Look at the Reddit threads about this topic lol the amount of straight face people saying it’s named after his grandmother makes me so upset

“It’s not a stylistic choice” -Earl Sweatshirt, the person who’s art you’re talking about as if you’re the authority on it

You're not wrong in hitting me on that but I know there is some interview somewhere talking about loss specifically and I cannot find it for the life of me
I still feel the later switch up has got to do with a lot of these concepts knowing his friends death and the content of idlsigo, this stuff is at least briefly touched on throughout Doris too just not the same way
We need an official timeline of ofwgkta in complete

Okay 2words you got me
No it’s Earl Sweatshirt who got you
I still do not care what he said in an interview, the way he sounds while recording is 100% his decision as an artist. On the new album he sounds clear and on point on every song besides my brother the wind which he sounds high as f*** INTENTIONALLY. Even on sick he sounds 100% coherent on every song besides the song sick where he INTENTIONALLY sounds f***ed up. It’s a choice
I just don’t see the switch in op

There were other songs on that album aside from DNA that stick out that was just the most noble example
And 45 production wise sounds like later Al work but he does not approach the beat the same way imo. Delivery wise sounds like the majority of IDLSIDGO to me and the flow is in a much sharper pocket then the "stream of consciousness" flow he adapted to on Al beats later on.

It’s not intentional tho imo it’s just how he sounded that day.

I remember when I first heard 45
There was never really any talk about the production style because this was before people started crying about loops or whatever
But to me that song marked a major departure from IDLS. Like holy s*** he’s rapping like cam Ron/jay z on a loop with this crazy energy and bar work
I never heard that before and for me when I got SRS it was the fulfillment of the promise that was 45, after hearing that, SRS and now this new album are exactly what I wanted
So I guess we experienced these eras and changes very differently
