Art is not a market
But it's a commodity. It's bought and sold, the demand for it is indicative of something.
Mainly Drake stans who fall back to this argument to compensate for lack of quality music
i refuse to believe k fed album even went silver
It didn't lemme replace it with The Chainsmokers album

As a music fan why would you care mostly about the data?
But to answer the question, it’s one of the few quantifiable measurements of music. Most certainly not a direct indication to quality, impact, or importance, but it is something for what it’s worth
Kinda hard to discuss what ages well cause of generational differences.
At least it's something interesting to discuss there's nothing to say about sales except one number is bigger than second number

Music doesn't need a quantifiable measure
Surely as a music fan you must know popular doesn't equal good so what difference does it make?

I agree with everything said here except for importance lol.
Music consumed by more people is inheritingly more important.

Sales don't impact my enjoyment of music.
But we're on a music forum shooting s*** all hours of the day. Just because sales don't equate to quality doesn't mean we can't talk about it or use it to assess the current state of music.
Are you gaining anything from this market?
It's not about me gaining anything.
Look at it like this, if I'm an up n coming artist trying to make it in the mainstream, I'm going to look at what sales the most and try to align myself with whatever is charting high.

It's important to the artist's well being and career moving forward but it's not a good argument at any discussion

To a certain extent if it was truly based on what was consumed and didn’t have external factors like label pushing, payola, etc. I agree though

So vanilla ice was more important than illmatic?
G Eazy album was more important than Lil peep hellboy mixtape

That makes sense but as a musical listener this shouldn't be a factor

There are music fans and then there are those who just fw what’s poppin and the next big thing. Sales discussion is for the latter

Agreed. and it's been like that on KTT for years

It doesn’t need it, but it’s interesting nonetheless. People sit up here all day and night trying to quantify their opinions so what’s the difference. Neither are necessary but both are a part of it. I’m not advocating that it is the end to all means like I said, but to deny that there isn’t a level of importance is disingenuous imo

Yes 100 percent.
Label pushing and payola are something many people ignore when discussing sales. It is never as organic as it seems for the biggest artists out there.

I don't know, it's not important to me unless the artist I like is doing well then I'm happy for them
who is this
Why this is popular home builder and tv show personality Robert Matthew Van Winkle
I don't know, it's not important to me unless the artist I like is doing well then I'm happy for them
Hey man I’m all for that. Nothing wrong with that at all. At the end of the day as the consumer you choose to enjoy it how you please

Yeah but it's stupid when people say "X outsold Y" because that doesn't matter they're still both rich rappers it doesn't matter who's richer
