Like it’s cool to track sales of artists just to get an idea of what’s hot rn

But I don’t know how people have entire discussions going back and forth about sales. It reminds me of people who go on endlessly about sports statistics. Never made sense to me but there’s a niche for it

At least it's something interesting to discuss there's nothing to say about sales except one number is bigger than second number

that's why i said yes and no.

So vanilla ice was more important than illmatic?

G Eazy album was more important than Lil peep hellboy mixtape

That falls more in the "impact" category.

That makes sense but as a musical listener this shouldn't be a factor

    True.

Like previous posters said. No one really cared about sales until 50 cent came into the game.
It's turned into kinda rooting for your favorite team/artist for the casual listener.

The 50 vs Kanye sale war changed th a paradigm of the music industry though. That meant something even to the casual listener. We were kinda investing in the future of hip hop during that time

  • May 6, 2021

I don’t care about album sales but I like seeing my favorite artists do well and break records

Why is this thread made every week

I see 50 Cent as a toxic influence for this and it ended up blowing in his face so karma maybe

this isnt true. Sales been discussed before that. Jay discussed it. Biggie did. Puffy did. Tupac would bring it up when he dissed people. Sales always mattered lol

Eh I was too young for those guys. The 50 cent/g unit era was first time seeing sales being discussed.

Also before streaming era everyone was selling 250-500k at the least. So it wasn't a big deal until 50 made it a literal sport

Album sale watchers are no longer the worst

    Plot twist: greetings is drake

  • May 6, 2021

the youth has the concept of comparison so ingrained into them by the time they can communicate that they know nothing else

so they use sales to make comparisons

  • May 6, 2021

    It's always been a thing

The real problem is fake views/sales tbh

Because if someone says a lie like Lil Baby or Travis Scott is hotter than Drake we can use objective numbers to prove them wrong

cause its the only "objective" metric people can use to prove that their favourite album is the best album "objectively"

other than that they have nothing so some people cling to it hard
