I think a lot of people engage more when they have the lyrics in front, different types of listeners engage differently
I’d sooner read lyrics than listen to music. You need both

I’m more like this with rock than rap, personally. Especially the first time I hear a rap song, I like to be surprised by what they’re going to say, I don’t want to read along with it; it feels like someone telling me the punchline of a joke before I hear get to hear the joke. But to each their own, obviously, and of course if the lyrics are in a language I don’t speak I’d like a translation but it’s not always possible so it’s not always a dealbreaker for me.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Mach and Fahim. The genius is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of Haitian Creole most of the bars will go over a typical listener's head. There's also Mach's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Jacques Roumain literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these raps, to realise that they're not just poetic- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Mach & Fahim truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the poetry in Mach's existential catchphrase "Wap Kon Joj!," which itself is a cryptic reference to Félix Morisseau-Leroy's Haitian epic Plenitudes. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Mach's genius wit unfolds itself on their ears. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Mach & Fahim tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

Yeah, I’d like the first couple listens to be w/o lyrics- but if an album I really like and the lyricism feels dense then eventually I’ll want to read along at least one time
No lyrics to read makes you listen harder and engage with the music more
Not everyone is American or knows the lingo

This is also true, haha. I do hope Mach’s official lyrics get posted somewhere some day. It’s coded music, it’s “not for everyone”, but if you like the music and just happen not to speak English or understand any of the American references, you deserve to know what he’s saying.

AAVE shouldn't need to be explained to those that don't understand. If the artist wants to that's their decision but sites like genius do it without the artists consent a lot of the times

Yes? Its their art?
Same copyright laws you uphold killed hip hop bc no one can afford samples

Lol I'm not talking about copyright. I'm talking about letting other artist control how their art is put into the world. Creative control

Foreigners, though? I’m cool with stuff not being explained to White America, but if it’s a Mach fan from Asia or something, I want them to know what’s going on in the song if they’re genuinely interested.
Genius and Whosampled been needed to die
Damn. F*** people for wanting to know more about samples and lyrics I guess

Precisely

Nah but really sample snitching is a real problem

I like Whosampled as a fan of music, but sample snitching isn’t great for art, ultimately. That’s how songs like “Simbi” (to use Mach as an example) get taken off streaming, etc. I know the person being sampled deserves compensation, but if you’re an independent artist who’s not getting to make the album you want to make because you don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars with which to clear everything, that’s kind of f***ed, too. A lot of artists don’t seem to even own their own publishing anyway (particularly the further back in time you go), so the people playing on the record that’s being sampled may not even see a dime of whatever settlement ends up being paid.

I feel like there’s a couple of different issues being addressed in this post but I can’t necessarily hate on sites like genius/who sampled cus we ALL done had songs where we was curious. and the only reasons they exist is cus naturally people wanna know
Didn’t even know sample snitching was a think too lmao

Oh, totally! Like I said, I personally like Whosampled, because I do get curious as a fan, but I totally get why artists don’t like it. Same with Genius; I like the idea and the format but if money is involved, then the Mach-Hommys of the world have every right to not participate on behalf of their own money.
