Fast food music produced fast food music videos. They still do bring more attention to a song than “- Topic” uploads and what not
That's unfortunate cause I get it MVs can totally just be a marketing tool but there are artists both commercial and indie that still can treat it as extension of their artistry, it's still art
Unless you’re an album/concept artist there’s really no value in a music video.
Once you’ve seen one NBa YB video you’ve seen them all
your song used to not exist until it had a music video lmfao
the real high status signal was having a song with millions of views off of a fan uploaded video like wayne cudi drake had
yeah girl I'm not watching a 3 minutes compilation of ads and soft p***
All music videos look the same now, and basically follow a similar concept to every other MV. Take my back to the days of Spike Jonze, Chris Robinson, Hype Williams and Little X. Hate to sound old but, no one's on that level anymore.
I still enjoy music videos
asap rocky
fka twigs
kendrick
playboi carti
ye (sometimes)
and I mostly love kpop music videos as they do not tend to oversexualize the content, just sometimes it's borderline but overall, it feels like a trip to wonderland

yes I do
the problem with music videos nowadays is that they do not have a stable platform other than youtube, back then music channels would always show the latest music videos and you had like 5+ music channels from where to pick, now everytime I stumble upon a music channel on TV it's always old music videos, pre 2015-2010

I had a great time watching music videos on MTV in the 00s great times
used to watch mtv all day before I had internet at home and before it turned into strictly garbage reality tv I'd catch myself watching f***ing Flavor Of Love cause there was hardly any actual music and that's around the time I just cancelled cable tv forever
MTV hits, 80s and 90s are still good channels
if i'm not actively watching the TV while doing something, i usually leave one of those on

Music videos use to premiere on YouTube in the late 2000s, but your video making it to TV was a real indicator of success. I remember how Cool Kids-Black Mag was mostly an internet thing, but when I saw them get play on Rap Cit, then played on MTV few times, you could see that they have popularity beyond the internet.

exactly, youtube was there too, but then streaming came into the scene and most people ditched youtube/music channels for it
before streaming people would use many other sources like
TV
Radio (applies only to music)
Physical Mediums like CDs/cassettes/vinyl (applies only to music)
even pirating
Youtube was there too but wasn't as accessible as now, not everyone in the world had internet in Youtube early years
I used to have a few music videos copied from external hard drives of people that had access to internet, music videos that weren't even shown on my music channels

Yep, something like Tyler-Yonkers making it to MTV was huge to me, cause it meant he was breaking through as an artist. But anyways, what really killed the art of the music video imo, is how explicit/sexualized MV got. Almost every rapper now has a BET Uncut style roster of videos, cause it's cheap and people just accepted it.
It's still weird to me how Rihanna-Kiss It Better wasn't that controversial, nor censored on YouTube. I remember BET trying to play the video in prime time on NYE, and having to censored the hell out of it, like Showgirls on cable lol. That's when I knew MV would never be the same.
