2019-2021 was so ass for rap that he didn't have much competition
Disagree. Anyone who says this was sleep
Lost the hook making juice it’s the answer to every variation of this question for every mainstream artist it’s been asked about. Anything else is semantics

His hook game was underrated during that 2017-2020 run.

I can think of another big artist this heavily affected as well, but I’m not gonna say so I don’t derail the thread.

It really do be that simple

He’s got plenty this decade, let’s not do that
He was just insanely gassed compare to his actual artistry, cause he did had a run where was dropping great s***.
So people were expecting him to grow as the years go. But it just didn't happened, he might have even regressed
Same s*** happened with Roddy, Dababy, and to a lesser extent Meg.
I think people expected more from him because he genuinely a smart and talented dude
I think when he started treadmilling people just got disappointed and disinterested
For a second it seemed like he was poised to be the most lyrically interesting trap rapper since Tip and it seemed like he had a similar hit making ability
He’s that talented player that people thought would be a goat but just turned out to be good
I think the biggest problem is he doesn’t have the natural charisma to coast on flow, production, and aura alone like Future, Thug, and even Gunna do. He actually has to say something for his music to be interesting and he isn’t doing it

!https://youtu.be/o-uWRhi2ngE?si=-WsUhzz5FEvxwhbHElite hooks. Coincidence it’s his hottest period? I think not

Doesn’t help that the nigga just learned how to rap right at the same he started to gain traction and quickly blew up
Like his run deadass started right after he found his voice/flow. He was screwed from the jump creatively cause he already didn’t enter the space with that juice he used to run to Gunna for before he realized what works for him
If he had mended that relationship, he’d be back on right now in some capacity. Cause I don’t think Thug or Future gone tell Baby “aye bro, you need to do this” now that he a boss nigga but his peer Gunna would
Lil Baby was overhyped and I get it cuz 2017-2019 Lil Baby was dropping hit after hit
But I think after that BLM song, people expected more from him when instead he probably just wanted to make the same turn up music his whole career which ended up being his downfall
For starters, He Came of age in the late 2010's, popped in 2020...he's approaching 10 years of 'relevancy' within the culture, a decline should be expected for most rappers by this point. 2020 was 5 years ago. Yes Indeed was almost 10 years ago. Freestyle was almost 10 years ago.
Nevertheless, I think it's because he needs better exec. producing in his camp IMO
Listened to the new album and to me, he clearly can rap. There's a level of wit charisma and modern youthful captionesque' lines littered all over the album. So, it's not like he can't write.
But the songs are just so mid, compared to even It's only me. When your strength is rapping, but not actually making songs it gets tough. Your shelf life isn't typically that great.
He truly could stand to benefit from allowing people to give him records that are more sonically in line with slaps. It's like...I think Lil Baby is clearly a better rapper than Gunna but Gunna is MILES better at actually making songs.
If you listen to My Turn and It's Only Me, comparatively to now, the songs on those projects were simply much better. Also, Lil Baby's run is / was pretty standard.
Think Lil Baby found a wave, and rode it as long as he could. He's objectively a fine to good rapper to me but it's always gonna be dicey when you can't make strong songs, strong hooks.
My Turn obv is a classic, but doing that again and again...and again is going to simply be tough when making good songs isn't in your wheelhouse.
Listen to records like 5 AM, Touchdown, songs he put out to promote the album. Like...he's rapping on them but the songs themselves are incredibly mediocre.
I deadass would just pay Hitmaka / Drake / PND / Jeremih / Tiller / Fridayyy etc. to EP my album and write for me. F*** it. I think more rappers should do that
I will say this
WHAM is an improvement to Its Only Me for sure
Cap
Yall just ain’t give it’s only me a chance
That s*** easily washes wham
